Twelve years ago, when I had just started my portrait photography business, I asked my grandma (I call her Ah Po) if I could take her portrait.

She had never had one taken before.

She said yes without hesitation.

Growing up in a single-parent family, Ah Po played a huge role in raising me and my sister. She was one of the strongest women I knew. Fiercely stubborn, never one to back down, but deep down she had the softest heart.

When I think about my childhood, two things always come to mind: the cane and the food.

She never thought twice about caning us or yelling at the top of her lungs when we stepped out of line. 😂 Looking back now, I probably deserved most of it.

But she also loved us in the way she knew best — through food.

She was an amazing cook, and I spent most of my childhood overweight because I never said no to her cooking. Every Chinese New Year, the whole family looked forward to her signature dishes.

Looking at these portraits today, I’m so glad we made the time to create them. Today, they mean more to us than ever.

Thank you, Ah Po, for loving us the way you always did.

42 🎂

Time is ticking and I feel it. There’s so much I want to do, so much I still want to learn and some days it feels like a race I didn’t sign up for.

This year, I want to move more freely. Less pressure, more curiosity. Growth doesn’t have to be loud - it just has to keep going.

Keep experimenting. Stay grateful.
