The National Aquatics Center, better known as “Water Cube”, is one of the best known venues of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Water Cube was specially designed and built by a consortium of Australian, British and Chinese firms (although PTW, the Australian architecture firm, is Chinese-owned).
The building’s form is inspired by the natural formation of soap bubbles. Ethyl tetrofluoroethylene (ETFE) was chosen for the façade, similar to that of Munich's Allianz Arena.
After the 2008 Beijing Olympics, half of the interior of the Water Cube was transformed into a water park. It is currently Asia's largest indoor waterpark and is considered a top tourist attraction in Beijing. The other half of the Water Cube retains its original purpose as a competitive facility and hosts international swimming and diving competitions throughout the year.
