The health of the rainforest isn’t measured only by towering trees or rare wildlife but it’s reflected in these small interactions like you see in the image. When decomposers, grazers, and microbes are working in balance, nutrients keep flowing, soil stays alive, and new growth is continuously supported. These relationships are too small for us to easily notice, but too important to ever ignore.

Oriental Whip Snake (Ahaetulla prasina)

Which is your favourite frame? Non-aggressive and mildly venomous, this whip snake screams elegance. This arboreal hunter looks almost vine-like as it glides through the trees with its slender body.

They’re actually fairly common in Singapore, especially around nature reserves and mangroves but their camouflage is so good that most people walk right past them without ever noticing.

I used to lug around two Canon camera bodies, one with a telephoto lens, the other with the whole macro set up on every expedition. Nowadays, I can’t walk 100m without sweating bullets in this heat and humidity. Getting “usable” images with just my iPhone, a tiny macro lens, and a mini LED panel is fun, fulfilling, yet challenging. Most importantly, it’s convenient. Check out the images and tell me what you think!

< Red Leaf Monkey (Presbytis rubicunda)>

Endemic to Sabah, Borneo, Red Leaf Monkeys are mostly brownish-red (SWIPE) with a bluish face and a constantly worried expression. What you’re looking at, is not an albino but rather a rare, natural, distinctive white coat that exists in only a few individuals. You may come across Red Leaf Monkeys all across Borneo but this white morph is exclusively spotted at Tawau Hills. We were lucky enough to have a short encounter with a juvenile white morph at the carpark just as the Sun was about to set.

Do pardon the dramatic music. The railings of the Rainforest Discovery Centre was teeming with life as diurnal insects and jumping spiders used the railings to get from place to place. Having a compact, fuss-free macro attachment like 100mm macro lens made it a breeze to capture the little details we may miss out. The footage was shot with the native camera app, at 1080p, manual focus. Although just a tiny baby, these boxer mantises are curious, yet ferocious predators, often taking down prey much larger than itself. Hopefully this little one manages to make it to adulthood, the number of jumping spiders roaming on those railings are astonishing!

Did you manage to find it? The Borneo horned frog is definitely a bucket list species for most wildlife photographers and herpers. Looking for them can be a huge challenge. With their earthy tones on their body, coupled with their signature horns, they blend seamlessly into the forest floor in absolute stillness. They are mostly heard rather than seen and being able to photograph one truly made the trip worthwhile. On a side note, I didn’t know they possess distinct pectoral gland protrusions on their chests that resemble ni***es. These are anatomical glands, not functional, mammal-like ni***es 😂

The future of mobile imaging has arrived. We all know smartphones are equipped with tiny sensors and apertures that can only capture limited light. Details then disappear the moment conditions aren’t perfect.

The HONOR Magic8 Pro doesn’t fight those limitations but it reprograms them. It is a phone that is built for possibilities and convenience. In a collaboration with the , we pushed the phone to its absolute limits at the Night Safari where we were faced with conditions even my professional set up will struggle. The phone utilises next-generation computational software to not just enhance images, but it reconstructs them with information traditional cameras/smartphones simply can’t gather.

Imagine minimal light with moving subjects at a distance, it is hard to fathom a mobile phone can produce images like this. Although not perfect, computational photography has come a long way and the HONOR Magic8 Pro is proof that we have entered a new era of mobile photography.

A splash of colours on this beetle to add some life to the gallery. Shooting with an extreme macro lens in the field is definitely not an easy feat when you are not shooting in a controlled environment but it is possible.

When I was sent this lens for review by .optics i took up the challenge to see how it performs compared to Canon’s old MPE-65. Pairing it with a powerful full frame mirrorless system like the EOS R5ii really makes it much easier with a responsive EVF due to the lack of light at higher magnifications. Being a 1-5x macro lens, your minimum magnification starts at 1x so you can imagine the detail you can get with subjects larger than your 35mm sensor.

I’ll leave the extreme macro shots to other reviewers as I don’t do tripods/macro rails with tons of light for studio work.

The term “Big Five” originally came from big-game hunters during the colonial era. It refers to the five most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa — not their size, but the challenge and risk involved in tracking and hunting them. Although poaching still remains a huge threat today, through awareness and conservation efforts, more people (like me) are hunting these animals with cameras instead.

To truly maximise your chances of seeing the big within your limited time in Africa, a private game reserve would greatly increase your chances. National Parks like Kruger are so vast that it would really depend on your luck. Needless to say, more days in safari would be better as every game drive offers something different. Of course the prices are much higher if you go for the private reserves.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Having an experienced guide makes or breaks your trip too. The guides at are extremely skilful in tracking the animals, sharing their wealth of knowledge with their guests along the way. If you are feeling adventurous, self drives are available within Kruger too.

During golden hour, we witnessed African elephant mother gently guiding her calf through the tall grass. Seeing elephants in the wild isn’t just awe-inspiring — it’s perspective-shifting.

Their slow, purposeful movements and unspoken connection remind us of what it means to live in harmony with nature, to protect rather than consume, to observe rather than control.

Moments like this ignite a deeper understanding: conservation isn’t just about saving a species — it’s about preserving the kind of beauty that reminds us who we are and what truly matters.
