Tabledreamer Photography

Tabledreamer Photography Photographer. Writer. Avid Reader. Liverpool FC fanatic. All in that order. My first experience with photography started when I was a young boy. Every shot counts.

Growing up, we didn't have the luxury of owning many expensive things, so when I stumbled upon my mother's film camera, I wasted no time in shooting anything and everything that caught my eye. Thus, the photographer in me was born. The only downside to film photography then was that you had only one shot, and you had to make it count. It's a rule I practice to this day when shooting with a digital

camera. Every expression is priceless. Every moment is magical. My purpose is to tell a story with the images I have produced, one that will leave a lasting impression for people to pass on to the next generation. Changing the world, one frame at a time.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps: Stories From The Fretboard 2025

Part 4: Forever Delayed

“You’ve photographed people and their guitars, but how come you don’t feature yourself since you play guitar anyway?”

Someone actually asked me this a couple of months ago while I was asking around for guitarists to feature.

To be honest, I have never been comfortable in front of the camera. I’ve been so used to being behind it that it’s hard for me to stay still properly.

But anyway, it’s not often that I take my guitar out of the bag so while waiting to find other guitarists to feature I might as well share my story of how I ended up with the Epiphone Dove.

The first time I laid my eyes on a sunburst acoustic guitar was many years ago. It was a Guild D-55, a classic dreadnought that is rarely sold anywhere outside of the United States.

Some would say that the D55 is the archetypal American acoustic guitar that has been played by many legendary musicians since it was first produced in 1968.

Unfortunately I do not own a D55 because I can’t afford one (it’s really expensive) but over the years it has become a pipe dream for me to own a sunburst acoustic guitar and when I finally came across the Dove a couple of years ago I knew that it was the perfect replacement for my Yamaha LL16.

This particular Dove had quite a history behind it; it was found in a really terrible state by the previous owner before me who then went to great lengths to restore it to the condition you see now.

It had gone through quite a journey and these days whenever I have the time to play it I always could see flashbacks of myself and the guitars that I used to have through the notes.

That’s the magic of a classic sunburst for you ✊🏻

Part 3: Folklore

There are musicians, and there are legendary musicians.

Patrick Chng is the latter.

I first met Pat many years ago when we both played at a mutual friend’s church wedding but I was a fan of his years earlier when his band The Oddfellows was one of the first few that brought the local music scene to prominence.

Even though we had not met up for many years, yet I still have his number in my contacts so when I texted him to ask if he was keen to do this shoot, he said yes without hesitation.

Pat’s Gretsch Gin Rickey is a one of a kind parlor guitar. Not many here in Singapore play a Gretsch, let alone a Gin Rickey so when he brought this particular guitar for this shoot, I pressed him to tell me how he had ended up with it.

“I wanted to get a parlour guitar and I wanted an acoustic guitar with a different sound that was different from the dreadnought guitars that I had.

So when I came across the Gretsch Gin Rickey, I love the vintage design and sound. And it’s a very affordable guitar too so I got it!”

Part 2: Sweet Disposition

James and I go back a long way; he and his family had blessed me with a Yamaha LL6 back when I had been looking to get a guitar and even though we hardly see each other these days, James was kind enough to take time off his busy work schedule to do this shoot for me.

I first came to know of the Yamaha L Series through James. The story of how he got his Yamaha LL36 is one for the books.

“This guitar was an unintended and almost impulsive purchase during a family trip to Japan in 2013 when I popped by a music store in Osaka.

Curiously, I explored the store and went down to the acoustic guitar section in the basement and the Yamaha LL36 caught my eye.

Having owned an LJ16, I’ve been a fan of the LL-36 and immediately I asked to try the guitar.

After a night of deliberation, I headed back to the store the next day and bought the LL36 and it’s been with me since.”

Part 1: Walk On The Ocean

The idea of returning to do a second edition of this project has always been on my mind, and since I had some time to kill, one of the first people I reached to was Wynstan.

Wynstan’s Baden D Style is probably one of the most unique guitars I’ve ever seen. From the outset, the shape of the guitar body itself became a conversation starter for the both of us and in some ways suits his easygoing personality.

“The Baden D Style is a very versatile guitar which can fit into any stage setting.

But it shines when played fingerstyle and the overall sound is quite balanced.

It suits my style of playing and it is one of my favorite guitars as it is no longer in production.

The most interesting bit is that it is made in Vietnam, thus it’s quite rare to see a Vietnamese made guitar that sounds so good.”

Over the years, I’ve developed a love for shooting portraits. And with each shoot I tried to push myself to do better than the last one.

So when a friend was bringing her basketball team to Singapore for an invitational tournament and asked if I could shoot individual portraits of the players and coaching staff, I said yes without hesitation.

I had a lot of fun shooting these portraits and even though the team was on a tight schedule, yet the players and coaching staff were very game and made the shoot so enjoyable.

And so these are just some of the shots that I’ve chosen for this post.

When you reach out, I am here hell or high water
This nest is never going away
My mission is to keep the light in your eyes ablaze”

My daughter Jordan turned 4 yesterday and there is never a dull moment in the house since the day she came into this world.

She’s growing up so fast that sometimes my wife and I could hardly keep up, but she has been a blessing to our family with her infectious energy, a highly creative mind and a very keen sense of awareness that sometimes we wonder all of that came from.

We can only thank God for this blessing and may she grow to be somebody who can make a big difference in the world 🎈

47.

Another year goes by so quickly and before I knew it, we're already in the final stretch of 2023.

As one gets older, birthdays are spent quietly. I guess it comes with age.

I look back on the things I've been through over the years and I thank God for His love, blessings and provision in my life.

Unlike last year, I didn't really do anything spectacular. Just a nice day out with my wife and daughter.

A huge thank you to those who sent their well wishes. I really appreciate you and your friendship for they mean a lot to me. Thank you all for being in my life and blessing me with your love and kindness. I couldn't ask for more.

One thing I wish for on my birthday would be to able to do better than I did next year than I did this year. Being a photographer has its ups and downs but capturing all these memories over the years has given me a sense of satisfaction and achievement.

I hope to capture more priceless memories for years to come.

When I first got into photography, I was really very new in the scene and was looking for ways to get work.

I starting collaborating with a fellow photographer friend of mine who was also an ex-colleague at the last job I worked in before I started shooting full time.

That collaboration went on to become the collective known as Hoppipolla.

Because we had just started, we needed to get our portfolio out right away. We were thankful that a couple we knew were in Bali the same time as us (I was there for my brother’s wedding) and kindly agreed to be our “guinea pigs”!

This was the first and only shoot my friend and I did together. I would move on to build up Tabledreamer Photography and my friend Faizola would go on go build Hoppipolla.

But whenever I look at these photos, I am constantly reminded of the struggles and experiences we went through in our journey as photographers and it will always remain a humbling and learning journey.

(PS) The bride, Izyan, who was an up-and-coming actress at the time of this shoot, would later go on to become a famous personality in the Malay entertainment scene.

“Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story, baby, just say Yes”

(Love Story - Taylor Swift)

The most beautiful and important part of a wedding would have to be the kiss.

It is often said that the first kiss of a newly married couple symbolizes love and commitment to the marriage that they have just agreed collectively upon together. And over the years, I’ve been really blessed to have been able to capture this important moment for the couples I have shot.

The one observation I have noted through the years is that most couples are usually quite shy when it comes to the kiss. I suppose it’s because they are doing it in the presence of so many witnesses that at times I’ve captured some really candid and funny moments of this beautiful act. So here are some of those moments!
