Welcome to cinematic 101 ladies and gentlemen. Today we will be talking about creating layers.
Layers in cinematography turn a flat image into a living world. They create depth, meaning, and focus.
By separating the foreground, midground, and background, you guide the audience’s eye and tell them where to look. A busy background can hint at a character’s chaotic life, while a shallow, clean frame can create intimate tension.
Most importantly, layers add visual richness and a sense of reality. They make the frame feel inhabited, like the story continues beyond the edges of the screen. It’s not just a picture—it’s a place.
