the compositional tricks i use in my fashion photography. diagonals, frames within frames, pyramids, rule of thirds, golden ratio. i don’t usually post visually informative content because i like keeping things purely visual here, but check out my tiktok or youtube shorts if youd like more of this. it might seem like a click of a button, theres more to street photography than meets the eye!

rule of thirds — one of my obvious favourites. sometimes i like to throw a spanner in the works and place an environmental essence dead centre instead. it can either create stability in the image, or by disrupting the balance, create even more dynamism through negative space.

pyramid — creates a strong visual presence because triangles naturally feel stable and powerful to the eye. it gives both the model and architecture a stronger sense of presence.

diagonal — using angles helps create tension, movement, and energy. very cinematic. asking the model to lean into the direction of the composition makes the image feel even more dynamic!

frame within a frame — adds so much depth to a photo because youre intentionally choosing where to position the viewer. using walls, doors, or windows helps direct immediate attention to the model while elevating the surrounding space too.

golden ratio — the holy grail. a spiral-like flow that guides the viewer’s eye naturally through the image. organic and visually pleasing, especially when paired with curved architectural spaces.

sometimes the most unassuming or messiest environment can help create the most captivating editorials!

having been a student of art for almost my entire life since childhood, ive always found myself deeply drawn to colour. figuring yourself out as a photographer can be a difficult journey because photography is such a vast medium with endless ways of seein. some people are obsessed with contrast, others with black and white, motion, shutter speed, or pure documentation.

i always found myself returning to colour. not just as an aesthetic choice, but as an emotional language. the way colours coexist within a frame, how they push against or soften one another, and how those relationships quietly shape the sensations a viewer feels when looking at an image.

learning to shoot through colour theory made me realise how much everything matters. not just the photo itself, but how garments, makeup, light and even the location all start speaking to each other. sometimes a colour only makes sense when it is placed beside another one. slowly understanding how primary, secondary and tertiary colours interact changed the way i approach fashion photography completely. suddenly even the smallest details begin to feel intentional.

how do passer-bys affect a fashion editorial on the streets?
learning to shoot fashion on location isnt just about the space, its about the people moving through it that gives it its breath. ive always loved to include passing figures, waiting for the right time to see someone walk into the frame. it changes everything because the image stops feeling staged and starts feeling alive. learning from old masters like henri cartier-bresson and the idea of the decisive moment, not forcing the shot, but waiting for life to complete it. sometimes all it takes is one person crossing the right corner at the right time.

what if fashion felt painted? coming off the recent met gala, the conversation between art and fashion feels louder than ever, a question even explored by philosophers like walter benjamin and john berger. personally, the line between the two has always felt like a veil that only reveals itself at the right moment. sometimes the photoshoot itself already feels like a painting, not just because of the way light falls, but because of how everything comes together in such a surreal manner. having been an art student, i was always taught to admire certain painters and understand what made them great. even though i cannot paint like them, sometimes everything aligns in a way that feels strangely familiar and beautiful. are we making social commentary with poverty corn, building visual dynamism, or simply human instinct to layer depths of floral and colours. learning how emotion, people, light and movement come together has become such an essential part of what i love to do, and suddenly the frame feels alive and that aliveness is what makes me enjoy this form of art (to those who ask). these are some of the images that made me feel more like a painter than a photographer, but of course credits to the teams that made them happen!

a fun day of colour hunting with through downtown Singapore. a game of wits and styling, as explored the myriad ways to wear their scarves with striking versatility. a project close to my heart as we set out to capture the city’s layered colour and texture while showcasing the beauty of their pieces!

funny enough when i first started photography, i shot almost exclusively in nature. “naturally” that meant most of my photos leaned green by default. leaves ranging from rich forest greens to colder teals slowly became the colours i saw the world through and the only way i could shoot. not even kidding. as i moved more into street photography and became strangely infatuated with shooting around temples and asiatic aesthetics, my work slowly shifted towards red instead.
colours can mean simple things at surface level, but what really interests me is the visual tension and momentum they create when they come alive inside an image. rather interesting evolution of my own journey that fits the mold well too. maybe that part is better left for the photos to speak for themselves
