Their photo exhibition reminds me of Living with Grace series which my cousin Yin May and I collaborated to tell a story of our grandma. Our grandma was 96 when I photographed her over 6 months. Through the photos and texts, we seek to show how living the later years with solitude, grace and simple contentment is worth celebrating.
Thanks Jerome for walking me through each student’s works, sharing the behind the scenes stories of these lovely grandmothers. Absolutely enjoyed listening to his curating process. Having curated my own exhibitions and also listening to others’ curating/creative process for their exhibitions, I always see curating or creative process as an additional bonus when it comes to sharing with viewers in person.
Before I left, he told me he was glad we were on the same wavelength and that we could communicate fluidly about process.
“Aww, well, my uncle who I used to talk anything photography, passed away. So if I meet anyone who talks photography, especially anything deep, I’m happy to stay and listen.” 12 years passed upon graduation so did my accumulated experiences in seeing the world the way others and I see.
He was my former lecturer for film making. Will always remember how he pushed me in film making because according to the project brief, audio was mandatory. But being Deaf, I asked him “How? I’m Deaf, how do I include, let alone edit audio?” Never did I dream that my short film got selected for the mini school exhibition back then. Yes, it had sounds but faded towards the end, inviting the viewers into my Deaf world. 🧏🏻♀️
Thank you Jerome for that challenge. It was a lovely catch up after a long time!
