This is the same evening and location as in the photo I posted yesterday, but facing North instead of West. What do you think the shape of the Aurora looks like?

In yesterday's post I wrote about STEVE. Now I've learned that the red ribbon in that photo wasn't STEVE but another phenomenon called SAR Arc (Stable Auroral Red). I hadn't seen that before either, so it was fun anyway. I hope that STEVE will visit us some day soon. 😀

🌟UPDATE🌟 The red arc in this photo is most likely not STEVE but another phenomenon: SAR Arc (Stable Auroral Red). This phenomenon was discovered in 1956. The reason why it wasn't known earlier is that it very rarely is visible to the naked eye. The human eye can hardly register red colour in the dark. The camera is much better at that.

STEVE, Milky Way and Aurora. We had quite a nice Aurora show in Umeå last Friday. While the Aurora was shining to the North, I also took some shots like this to the West to capture the Milky Way. I still got some Northern Lights to the right in the image, but I think the most interesting thing is the red ribbon to the left. This is another atmospheric phonomenon called STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement). It is caused by hot plasma at an altitude of 450 km, with a temperature of 3000 °C and flowing at a speed of 6 km/s. I've never seen STEVE in real life before, so it was a little exciting. Have you heard of STEVE before?

Moody night at Ume River. There was a lot of Aurora activity that night, but also a lot of mist in the air. It made it look green kind of everywhere.

Nights aren't totally dark here yet, but the Milky Way is visible now. We never get to see the core of it this far north - it's always below the horizon - but we've got Northern Lights instead. That's a good trade if you ask me. 😀

Welcome back, Aurora Borealis! It was really nice to see you again last night. I hope it will be a good season.

This place by the sea is my favourite location near Umeå for watching the full moon. I've made it kind of a tradition to go there in May and watch the moon rise over the lighthouse. I'm happy that I could do that this crazy year as well.

It's fascinating how much a full moon can light up the landscape. It can look almost like daylight in photos. It's beautiful, but it also makes it hard to see any Northern Lights. The moon won the battle the night that I took this photo.

Can you see what this is? I think it looks almost like a puddle of oil. It's actually a closeup of polar stratospheric clouds over snowy rooftops at sunrise. Aren't these clouds quite fascinating?

Do you notice the lichen hanging from the branches of the tree in the foreground? It's an indicator of clean air. That kind of lichen is very sensitive to pollution. Apparently, the air is really fresh at this beautiful place since the trees are full it.

When the Northern Lights aren't active, it's nice to see some other sky phenomenons instead. These are polar stratospheric clouds. They are at very high altitudes. That's why the sun was shining on them a longer time after sunset than on the regular clouds. What do you think it looks like? It felt like watching a science fiction movie or that someone was painting on the sky with a giant, colourful brush when standing there 😀.

Winter reflections in a crystal ball. I was a little bit nervous that my Lensball would fall down into the stream from the bridge railing, but there was enough of wet snow around it to keep it safe.
