Alaska semester - mountain section
Ration one
Getting flown out to the start of our journey by amazing Matt (Blue Ice Aviation) for what seemed to be one of the largest toes of a glacier i have ever witnessed. The tazlina. After a quick rendezvous and some tips and tricks of how to pack their new carry systems(the students had only sea kayaked until this point). We all wonked away with a wide spektrum of perfect looking backpacks to ones that needed just a bit more attention.
The start of this route turned out to be quite interesting, as none of us instructors had been here before. So routefinding and coaching was done on the spot and we sneaked our way throught the side before we stumbled upon our first crux. To get diagonally through the crevassed and cracked up section to a flatter part in the middle.
With some new knowledge of how to use crampons we could tackle this with alot of chopping steps and routefinding through steep ice, only to find ourselves having to do the exact same thing going back to the side of the glacier in the end of the day. We decided to bail the glacier, following a bear that scrambled up the hill so fast it made us look like we are some aliens who dont know how to walk.(which we kind of are) We found camp high up on a ledge which turned out to be the highlight campsite of the trip!
From here we just had to get down to the glacier only to a few miles up get up the mountain again to cross a pass to get to our first re ration. Here ee encountered our second bear, a curious grizzly that is chaaaarging down the mountains to inspect us. Afraid that we would have to bail on our route as this grizzly was in the way we thought we might not make it to our reration spot in time. After bear left a tired crew was hauling up this mountain pass and showing incredible grit and strength to finish the first part of our route.
Common nominator of this ration period was long days, blister and foot care and it was not going to change our last day as we scaled down this steep mountainside in the rain using veggie belays to lower ourselves down to a good few days of rest!
