Finally made it! Back behind the controls of the Caravelle again, and this time flying!

Can’t beleive it was some 9yrs (!) ago since I helped Nils with the recording of cockpitsounds for his simulatorproject. We went through all switches and alarms etc that we possibly could. By then the simulator was still in Germany but nowadays you find it in Gotland, Sweden. ”Poitou” is a fantastic project with so many manhours and so much money behind. Well worth a visit whenever you have possibility to do it.

I have been in the left hand seat several times during engine startups on SE-DAI and also in the right hand seat during taxi. But today I enjoyed the left hand seat flying. After a first catastrophic takeoff I soon got to know the feeling and sensitvity of the aircraft and made some visual circuits around FRA, both daytime and dusk. Doesn’t take long before you totally forget you are in a static simulator, it’s so real!

The background behind bringing DAF to Finland as well as a continious search for future exhibits with finnish history. This would be needed in our country as well…

The finnish team has done a fantastic job with SE-DAF sofar. I was afraid they would need to cut the aircraft in preparation for the transport but they actually dismantled it in pieces. Fin, engine cowlings, stubwings, flap sections. Even the main wing has now been separated from the fuselage. Next step will be to lift the fuselage off the wing. Also it seems to be planned with a gear retraction to make the transport easier. This very professional work was paused some week ago.

Sofar this beauty has graced the Swedish soil, without leaving it for a second the last 48 years… well it raised one wheel at a time from the ground once in a while when me and my team replaced old damaged wheels to better ones so it could be moved again.

After facing what seemed to be a certain death, a deal finally went through with the finnish museum to move the aircraft across the Baltic Sea, restore it in old Finnair colors and put it on display.

SE-DAF was recently moved to the new scrapping apron at Arlanda, but not to be broken but instead carefully dismantled and prepared for transportation to Finland. You can see the jacks already in position under the aircraft.

I sincerely hope they manage to remove the wings without cutting… The Caravelles main wing comes off in one piece. The left and right wing are then joined in the centerline.

I enclosed some pictures of OY-KRD where it can clearly be seen how the wing construction is made.

A recent state visit from Libya gave the opportunity to this picture. Remember that Libyan Airlines had Caravelles long time ago? SE-DAF in the background is being prepared for a boat trip to Finland where it will be restored and displayed in old Finnair colors. Click on the picture as the Caravelle is in the lower part…
