Portraits of the Kalahari

How would you characterise their personality from these single photographs?

What moods do they express?

How do you feel looking at them?

The Blue Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus)

On one of the roads while driving to the Mata Mata camp in Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park we met a large magnificent herd of blue wildebeest, which encircled our car and allowed us a beautiful close contact experience.

The blue wildebeest are one of the few larger animals in the Kalahari that need to drink about 12 liters of water every 1-2 days. Most of the other animals could manage much longer periods without water.

Ostrich (Struthio camelus)

A couple of Ostriches taking a sand bath in the evening. They do this to get rid of fleas and parasites.

They run on two toes and can reach a maximum speed of 72Km/h (45 mph) and sustain it for up to 30 mins.

The males are black and the females grey.

We usually found them hanging around with the Springbok.

The Yellow mongoose (Cynictis penicillata)

Just a few meters from our tent I spotted the Yellow Mongoose having a stroll.

Something to learn from this is to make sure the tent is zipped close to avoid any surprises

The yellow mongoose is sometimes referred as the red meerkat, which can be confusing as there are meerkats there too.

The springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), photographed in the Kalahari dessert, during our first day.

Something unique for the springbok is a special kind of jump called pronking, in which the springbok performs multiple leaps into the air while releasing a scent. This scent is said to smell sweet like perfume.

This jump can be up to 2 meters high. It is believed they do this to alert the other springboks in the herd.

This is a picture that I took during my recent trip to Tōkyō, Japan.

The model, Yurika-san, was both friendly and very easy to work with, needing minimum direction and knowing when I was just composing for a shot and when to switch pose for a new shot, a true professional.

Unfortunately the day for our shoot, which was the day before I was flying back to Stockholm, was slightly rainy. And even though the natural light was not as strong as I had hoped for, leaving me to push the ISO higher, the ambient light together with the reflector fill created a beautiful lighting setup.

Yurika-san is wearing the elegant Lumitoro Tubii collection in sterling silver.

During my martial arts training trip to Japan I had the opportunity to meet up with my good friend Uchimura san. And on my last day there, we managed to find some time for a Lumitoro photo shoot with his daughter Kikki san.
It was a fun experience doing a shoot in Japan, with my limited Japanese language knowledge, and at the same time a fun way to practice and learn more.
Here is a first picture that I've completed from this short and rather improvised photo shoot.
It is not really possible to see it in the picture, but in the background we have the Sakura, cherry tree flowers blooming.
Uchimura san was kind enough to act as my photo assistant learning how to use the reflector quickly!

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Most people, if not all, know that physical exercise is important for their well being. By correctly practicing movement the quality of life can be improved. Movement affects thinking.

It is interesting that few seem aware that they can improve their way of thinking, which, just like everything we learn, requires practice, and this too can improve the quality of their life and your happiness. Thinking affects movement.

I'm looking forward to this trip on Thursday to Japan. I know there will be plenty of martial arts practice, thinking and laughter.

This picture was taken in Japan, in 2007. Unfortunately I do not recall exactly where, I believe it is from a temple in Tokyo.

"You will be in for an adventure in a not too distant future, learning many new things" (I wrote and predict this myself!)

The fortune cookie is something many believe to be a Chinese traditional thing. This is untrue and I recall reading about the fortune cookie being invented in San Francisco, USA.
However the story is more complex than I thought.
I took a look at wiki and found out there is a Japanese variant.

"They contain a fortune; however, the small slip of paper was wedged into the bend of the cookie rather than placed inside the hollow portion. This kind of cookie is called tsujiura senbei (辻占煎餅)"

Also I found this passage quite funny :)
"Rumors that fortune cookies were invented in China are seen as false. In 1989, fortune cookies were reportedly imported into Hong Kong and sold as "genuine American fortune cookies". Wonton Food attempted to expand its fortune cookie business into China in 1992, but gave up after fortune cookies were considered "too American"."

Now back to packing for my Japan trip...

The picture was taken in 2007 in Hombu dojo, Japan. And it is not a fortune cookie scroll!

These pictures I took in Spain this winter while visiting the beautiful castle and gardens of Alhambra in Granada.
