Bronze sculptures titled Sången & Dansen admire the glowing views from their waterside position within the gardens of Stockholms stadshus (Stockholm City Hall). The two figures were created by Swedish Sculptor and artist Carl Eldh who alongside Carl Milles is one of the most popular Swedish sculptors of the 20th century.

Part.8 Sky Cube

A descent under the streets of Stockholm 🚇📸

8th stop: Solna Strand station

Designed by Sculptor Takashi Naraha the station opened in 1985. The installation called ‘The Cube of Heaven’ consists of blue cubes with a cloud motif that juts out from the cave like ceiling and the dark concrete platform. This contrast of light and the dark is characteristic of Takashi Naraha’s work, the Japanese artist often uses a Ying and Yang theme in his artwork, a balance between light and darkness. The cubes mirror the open sky giving the commuter a snippet of the heavenly sky above ground.

6th stop: Västra Skogen station

Created by Sculptor Sivert Lindblom Västra Skogen opened in 1975. Västra Skogen means ‘The Western Forest’ named after the area that was previously known as Ingentingskogen ‘The Nothing Forest’

The name of the station and the myths of the old forest inspired the Artist to create a sense of mystery and wonder. Across the platform walls lie colourful patterned tiles that communicate the direction of travel and contrast with the dark rock walls. Mysterious polished human faces sculpted from rock protrude from the rugged walls their distinctive shape was based on Lindblom’s own profile. The Artist shaped a fairytale environment that evokes the imagination and offers the commuter a sense of wonder.

Part.5 Underworld

A descent under the streets of Stockholm 🚇📸

5th stop: Solna Centrum station

Created by Artist’s Karl-Olov Björk and Anders Åberg Solna Centrum station opened in 1975. When descending the escalator their striking artwork is revealed, a fiery red colour envelops the station creating the feeling of entering an underworld.🔥

The Artist’s painted a red and orange gradient across the walls to depict the evening sun and a strip of emerald green paint to represent a forest landscape giving the illusion of the sun setting behind the treetops. Originally the walls were only supposed to be these colours but the two Artist’s added illustrations to represent some of the societal issues Sweden faced during the 1970's such as the environment, over logging of forests and the depopulation of rural areas.

A descent under the streets of Stockholm 🚇📸

Third stop: Odenplan station

Designed by David Svensson and opened in 2017 Odenplan is one of the more recent stations to feature artwork. Inspiration for the lighting installation came from the birth of David Svenssons baby son and his sons heartbeat on the CTG monitor during childbirth. The jagged illuminated lines are situated at the western entrance of the station and travel above the escalators that lead from the platform.
