RIP James Gadson 🕊️ When bass player Del Atkins asked if I could photograph a session with James Gadson, Clarence McDonald, Wah Wah Watson, Bobbye Hall, Phil Upchurch, George Shaw, and Wilton Felder, I said yes without hesitation. I think I was in there for about 6–7 minutes before Wah Wah said, “ENOUGH!” I was out just as fast—but those minutes in the studio were golden. Honored to have photographed James and all of them.

James Gadson came from Kansas City to Los Angeles in 1966 and became a key figure in the R&B session scene, playing on grooves for artists like Bill Withers, Beck, Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand, and Cheryl Lynn (Got to Be Real). He was one of the most recorded drummers in R&B history, appearing on more than 300 gold records, and also played on I Want You and Love Hangover, as well as singing lead on Loveland.
