Tornedalingarnas dag - THE DAY OF TORNEDALIANS

On the 15 th of July the we celebrate ‘Tornedalingarnas dag’.
The day of the Tornedalian people.

Tornedalians are one of Sweden’s five national minorities, with a culture shaped by the rivers, forests, wetlands, and life in the north.

The term Tornedalian is geographically linked to the Tornedalen region, but it does not fully reflect the minority’s historical, linguistic, and cultural diversity. Many members of the minority who live outside the geographical area of Tornedalen often identify as Lantalaiset or Kvens.

Many members of the group have also moved to other parts of Sweden over time, but they still belong to the minority through their linguistic, cultural, or geographical heritage.

Traditionally, the Tornedalians, Kvens, and Lantalais-people lived through a mix of livelihoods: fishing, hunting, small-scale farming, reindeer herding, forestry, trading and crafts.
A sustainable way of life that still continues to be a part of their culture in many ways.

The minority language associated with the people is called Meänkieli, which means ‘our language’. The flag raised today is called ‘Meänflaku’ - our flag.

Anna-Lena is a warm and caring person who has such a big heart. ❤️ She is creative and has a passion that shines trough.
She spreads love for animals and share knowledge about Sami culture. It is a very genuine experience visiting her and her beloved animals. 🥰

In October I traveled to to photograph and film as part of my ongoing work with - an organization representing tanneries in Sweden.

I documented the process from raw hide to finished sheepskins.
These images and clips are a glimpse of what I captured during my day in Tranås.

In November I traveled to , to photograph and film as a part of my work with - an organization representing the tanneries in Sweden.

I was documenting the process from raw hide to finished leather. A cultural tradition that still lives on.

Leather and hides come from a natural by-product of the food industry, making use of a material that would otherwise go to waste.

These photos are a glimpse of what I captured on my trip.

Malou and Gontran moved from France to Överkalix, where a dream of a quieter, nature-centered life became reality.
They live with their six dogs and run their company .pack.adventure guiding tourists in nature-based activities all year around.
