The so-called "snow monkeys" are in fact Japanese macaques. Although they are wild animals, they congregate around the warm volcanic springs to stay warm. The families can be seen playing, eating and grooming around the pools

A selection of the wildlife I was fortunate enough to witness on my recent trip to Northern Sweden. The red foxes look so bushy and bright, all puffed-up against the sub-zero temperatures. The woodpeckers tapping away in the falling snow. And last but not least, the majesty of the golden eagle

I love all animals, but when travelling with my camera, birds are often the first creatures you see to remind you that you are in a different and often unique part of the planet.

Finland's birds look beautiful even in the rain. I went in hope of golden eagles, but each day brought a procession of fascinating birds, despite the continual rain. For 3 days it just rained from dawn until dusk. Then on the last day, as if an open, the sun emerged and with it a majestic eagle

People often ask me if I find the longs waits, which often characterise wildlife photography, as boring. The answer is no. As the hours of each day passed, the temperatures rose to around 40°C as we waited for that glimpse of a tufted ear or mottled fur which announced a lynx. But there was a constant procession of fabulous birds and animals to watch for that 99.9% of the time we waited in hope

Iberian magpie. I hadn't come across these busy, chatty birds before. They arrived at the water hole as a large and noisy mob, flashing iridescent blue feathers and bobbing up and down. Even though we spent hours waiting for the chance of seeing a lynx, there was always plenty of birdlife to keep us entertained
