Oh how I miss this encounter from late summer last year. I've revisited the spot multiple times, walking up and down trying to map out where they could've nested in the hopes of finding the parents with another juvenile clutch. But due to health issues I was not able to sit out in the spring and listen, and my trekking efforts have proven futile.

Hopefully I'll get another chance with these, or perhaps another owl in the future. It seems to be a bad year over all here with no long eared owl juveniles begging for food. But still a long time to go before summer is over.

Yesterday we had a rainshower with some proper downpour at times, weaved with some thunder. I had other plans but ended up at the terns yet again. No images of the thunder sadly, next time perhaps

"Not so common" tern project is proceeding better than anticipated. Last night there was a total of 3 couples feeding in the cove with over 50 dives during my visit. Not all were great photo opportunities but it's just fun to experience.

I saw a cool potential scene with the full moon last night. Unfortunately the terns weren't hovering at that spot and tonight it rises too late. For next year I guess.

As with previous springs I’ve gone out to a local spot where common terns gather to court. The courtship involves the male fishing and presenting food to the female over and over, which gives lots of opportunities to study the behaviour of the terns.

After three years at this spot I’m pretty confident in what exact locations the dives will be and when they will occur (and have become a common sight for the dogwalkers). The hard part is framing and tracking the bird while it moves around the area, seeing as I’m waist deep in water and can’t use the EVF and am fully reliant on the LCD screen. And with a 400mm lens attached, the field of view you get is extremely small. But with enough trial and error I’ve managed to figure this out as well, you need to focus on the tern before it dives.

As I often want the soft evening backlight that’s where I’ve focused most of my efforts, but if I walk twenty meters to the east they fish there as well in soft direct light, so that might be something to explore in the future, right now I use that side mostly for slow shutter hover shots.

This has been a project in the works for some time. Capercaillie lek-sites are extremely secretive unless you go to one of many paid hides in Sweden. I actually got the location from this place (that you photograph from the car) as a returned favor for guiding another photographer around the great grey owl last summer.

To be at this spot before sunrise I have to drive at around 4am, so there's actually only been one visit from me so far. I was supposed to go today when the conditions looked more or less perfect, but my insomnia kicked in and I didn't feel comfortable with driving on 2hrs of consecutive sleep.

I hope to manage at least one more session before the event is over. Logging is also encroaching which is not encouraging for future seasons...

I thought I’d share some of my more successful images of March.

The location where I’ve spent the most time this year is different from previous two years, due to how the winter affected the reeds the grebes does not seem to want to nest in their usual spot, so I had to go look elsewhere.

In an old spot I used back in 2023 and even earlier I could photograph the grebes towards a small shadowed part of a bridge, providing me with some very interesting and cool low-key perspectives.

Most if not all of our seafloor here is just mud and sediment, so one wrong step and you sink 20centimeter and get stuck, so its best to stick close to the reeds where the roots provide some support for your feet to stand on.

Slowly but surely the ice is lifting its grasp on the cove where the grebes nest. This what shot around this time last year, fun to see the contrast in weather. But soon they'll hopefully return and I can get back into the water to document some courtship behaviour.

It took me more or less the entire winter before I got a "good enough" photo of this great bittern. I would've wished for a slightly lower angle but you don't get everything 🙂

Very similar to the image shared on my story, it's actually not the same photo but slightly later in the series when the bird was almost out in the open. Why? Well this individual has had the fortune of getting a daily fish delivery seeing as the lake was completely frozen. Now with rising temperatures the lake is opening up fast and it will go back to its normal secretive lifestyle.

Male bearded reedling from last Saturday. The winter seems to finally (according to some) start to losen up its grip over Scandinavia and with that spring is around the corner. I'm a bit excited to be able to go back to my grebes, even if it also means that the chances of Otter, Great Bittern and other winter species I've not successfully photographed this time is over.

For the past weeks I've been visiting a wetland in an effort to try and photograph a great bittern, unfortunately it has proven a lot harder than initially anticipated and I'm not the only one with this goal.
Due to lots of irresponsible behaviour this wetland is now more or less closed off and the opportunity sadly gone.

Instead I've spent more time trying some creative compositions with the one or two dippers that has decided to spend the winter in a nearby stream.
I have more unrealised photos to take of this bird which I hope to be able to check of in the near future
