Golden trees, glass-clear water, and silent mountains—nature’s way of reminding us to slow down and breathe.

Lai da Palpuogna, a mountain lake located along the Albula Pass in Graubünden, Switzerland is often called “the most beautiful spot in Switzerland”. The clear waters, the blue-green reflections of the mountains and sky in summer make it a favorite among photographers. There's no such thing as "the weather is too bad for photography" so the cold autumn rain when I got there was an opportunity to create something different.

It was breezy so the trees are not as sharp as they could have been if I'd used focus stacking, however, a long exposure with the ND filter and polariser helped emphasize the natural glass like, see-through look of the water.

EOS R6 MK II, 30s at 28mm, f/22, ISO 800, 10 stop ND Filter, Lee Circular Polariser and a warm jacket 🙂

The Landwasserviadukt, Graubünden is one of the most iconic railway structures in Switzerland if not the world. In the modern "snapshot" era almost every image is from the "front" of the viaduct, with the viewer looking into the curve. You hardly ever see shots from the river looking back at the viaduct. I wonder what it looks like from the other side?

The image I had in my head was going to be looking up from the river with the Milky Way "shining" down onto the viaduct, but I got there too late to find the best location. I wanted to take about 100 images and stack them later but the clouds came early and that was that.

The photo (single test shot) is about 30 minutes after sunset with the Milky way starting to fill the skies.

Need to visit again next year.

4000 kilometeres in 7 days.

Give me light and I’ll create you some memories.

First of all, thanks for following this page. Over the next few months, I’d like to share my journey from an IT Engineer to a photographer. It’s going to be challenging but it’s also going to be fun. First step is to get started with some proper product photography which means time to buy some lighting systems.

Believe it or not but light can be controlled, and motion can be created with light. That means an understanding of controlled lighting as well as an understanding of creating motion.

Light is light. The principles are the same whether its a cost-effective lighting system or a complex high-end system costing thousands. Knowledge of light and how light can be used is the difference.

In the next few posts, I’ll cover some of the equipment I’ll be buying and the reasons why. I’d love to share the journey with you.
