A precious moment between two Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica), reflecting their close connection. The female preens and her partner watches curiously. Puffins are known for their strong pair bonds and they often return to the same burrow with the same mate each year.
🐧 Around 80,000 pairs of puffins nested on Runde this year. While it wasn’t one of the best seasons, it also wasn’t among the worst. It started off well with many birds present at their burrows early on. However, as time went on it became clear that food availability was limited. Fewer and fewer birds were seen returning to their burrows with fish. Puffins primarily feed on small fish such as herring and sandeel, species that thrive in the waters around Runde. But this year some of the fish they brought back, if they brought any at all, were noticeably white in color, indicating they were low in nutritional value. Such poor-quality fish aren’t enough to sustain growing pufflings.
Protecting their habitat, making mindful seafood choices and reducing plastic waste are small steps we can all take to help puffins and the seas they depend on. 🖤
