A precious moment between two Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica), reflecting their close connection. The female preens and her partner watches curiously. Puffins are known for their strong pair bonds and they often return to the same burrow with the same mate each year.

🐧 Around 80,000 pairs of puffins nested on Runde this year. While it wasn’t one of the best seasons, it also wasn’t among the worst. It started off well with many birds present at their burrows early on. However, as time went on it became clear that food availability was limited. Fewer and fewer birds were seen returning to their burrows with fish. Puffins primarily feed on small fish such as herring and sandeel, species that thrive in the waters around Runde. But this year some of the fish they brought back, if they brought any at all, were noticeably white in color, indicating they were low in nutritional value. Such poor-quality fish aren’t enough to sustain growing pufflings.

Protecting their habitat, making mindful seafood choices and reducing plastic waste are small steps we can all take to help puffins and the seas they depend on. 🖤

Close up details of an Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) showing its nictitating membrane, a translucent third eyelid that protects the eye while still allowing it to see.

With its black triangle shape around the eye, red eyeliner, colorful beak and bright yellowish rosette at the base, the Atlantic Puffin has character. It stands out. And it’s meant to.

🐧 Did you know these bold colours appear during spring and last through the summer when puffins breed and need to make an impression?
Females are drawn to males with the biggest and most colourful beaks, not just because they look impressive but because those colours signal good health and maturity. All traits that are crucial when raising healthy pufflings. When the season ends the colours fade. The bright outer layers of the beak are shed, leaving a less vibrant version.

Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica)

It had been years since I last visited Norway. One night in the forest while drifting to sleep in my tent I thought; What if we went to Runde to see the puffins? Two weeks later we packed our bags and drove across the country with an adventure on the horizon. 🐧🇳🇴

Driving through deep forests and landscapes that left us in awe made the journey itself feel like a dream. Being surrounded by this kind of wild beauty reminded me how lucky we are to have such incredible nature so close. And when we finally reached Runde, it was beyond what I’d imagined.

The hike to the bird cliffs was steep and wild. Along the way we were greeted by the great skua gliding over the landscape and when we finally reached the top the dramatic view of the sea and cliffs took our breath away. Since it was my first time on Runde I didn’t quite know what to expect. But I was in for a treat.

Fingers crossed and we waited for hours.. and when the air filled with black fluttering wings and tones of bright orange and yellow against the dark rugged cliffs I could hardly believe my eyes. There were so many of them, an explosion of these wonderful, charismatic birds. The puffins were so funny and incredible to watch and at times I almost got the feeling that they knew we were admiring them. It’s a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life. 🖤
