Set against the backdrop of a sprawling, sun-drenched coastal resort, the video opens on a spacious balcony high above the turquoise sea. A man stands at the railing, holding a classic bottle of beer in one hand and a notebook in the other, gazing thoughtfully over the rugged mountains and bright swimming pools below. He appears completely absorbed in the view, unaware of his surroundings.

From the shadow of the apartment doorway, a blonde woman stands quietly watching him. The camera transitions into a smooth, sweeping drone shot that slowly pulls away from the balcony. As the camera retreats into the sky, the figures on the balcony shrink into the wider, breathtaking view of the seaside resort, capturing a lingering sense of quiet observation and unspoken drama between them.

Here I’m swapping my zoom and focus demands (controls) over from one tripod arm to the other. I operate with what is often seen as the ‘American Way’ - zoom on the right and focus on the left. I work on a lot of American shoots and so I’ve found it easier just to keep things the same as the other operators there. It does mean though that when I am working at home in the UK I am often set up differently to the operators here. No big deal though, it just requires some speedy changeovers on a job like the Commonwealth Games here where I am sharing the coverage of the day with another camera operator.

Passive income is great if you can get it, but so’s having a job you enjoy. Happy that the Commonwealth Games are back in Glasgow and that I’m operating camera on them. Also happy that we are indoors and so weren’t affected by the torrential rain yesterday!

This course is aimed at those looking to start or kick-start their careers in film & television production. It’s run by me - Adam Carrel - a professional of twenty years who has worked all over the world for WWE, BBC, Sky, Champions League Football and more.

The course will cover cameras, sound, lighting, cabling, streaming, live switching, directing and more! Students do not need to bring any equipment as it is all provided.

Break Into TV

Thomas and Rory completed my course before travelling to India for a week-long job. Thomas went on to shoot a huge boxing press-conference in Saudi Arabia.

Rory went on to land a job with Hawk-Eye filming professional tennis around the world. This is him in California.

Ryan completed my course and then had the confidence to apply for roles he hadn’t before. He’s now a full-time freelance camera operator working regularly on professional football and basketball.

Paul completed my course and then came with me to New Delhi for a week to shoot professional wrestling.
