As a photographer, I find that sometimes capturing just a part of the torso can say more than a full image. There’s a kind of intimacy in focusing on the small details—the curve of a muscle, the subtle play of light on skin. It feels like an invitation for the viewer to imagine the rest, to connect with the person behind the image in a way that's more personal, almost private. Sometimes, it’s true—less really is more.

I moved to Kislovodsk about five years ago, right before the pandemic. My grandmother used to live here, and as a kid, I’d often spend my summers in the south, getting to know the area and the slower pace of life. Somehow, it just made sense to settle here later on. Now, I split my time between Kislovodsk and Saint Petersburg, with regular trips along the way to Moscow. It’s a bit of a balancing act, considering there’s about 2,000 kilometers between St. Petersburg and Kislovodsk, but it works for me.

Living here brings a peace that’s hard to find in a big city—the fresh mountain air, the open spaces, and the park right nearby. I honestly can’t picture myself living long-term in a metropolis, surrounded only by concrete, without that access to nature and the calmness of mountain surroundings.

Some of my models, I think, you could easily recognize—even from behind. For instance, I have a shot of Sergey Yaroslavtsev in my home studio that has that unmistakable presence.

I don’t usually photograph the city, maybe because I feel a bit shy about it. Saint Petersburg is home to incredibly talented photographers who’ve been capturing its essence brilliantly for over a century. Their work almost feels like a tribute to the city, setting such a high standard that it’s both inspiring and intimidating. With their mastery, they’ve documented everything from iconic landmarks to quiet, hidden corners in ways that are hard to compete with.

But every now and then, I find myself unable to resist. I’ll snap a few photos, even if they feel like a small attempt compared to the impressive work out there. There’s something special about capturing a moment of the city in my own way, however simple.

For a "style over quality" approach, I brought a disposable Kodak film camera to these competitions. Obviously, it’s not really designed for this kind of shoot, but it had a built-in flash, which gave me the perfect excuse to bring a little fun into the scene! The athletes got a kick out of it, and the spontaneous vibe really suited the backstage chaos. Sometimes, the quirky, low-fi feel of disposable film just adds something unique, even if it’s not about perfect image quality.

In bodybuilding, people often talk about genetics, but not many can really explain what it means. Plus, bodybuilding is for everyone, and these discussions can easily leave out a lot of athletes whose genetic advantages aren’t obvious at first glance.

There are plenty of folks out there with strong character and the drive to succeed, proving that it’s not just about genetics when it comes to achieving greatness in this sport. I mean, determination, hard work, and grit can take you pretty far, even if you don't fit the typical mold.

I personally prefer the old-school way of thinking, where beauty and genetics were almost like two sides of the same coin. Back in the day, it seemed like there was a clearer link between having great looks and good genetics, which made appreciating the art and discipline of bodybuilding a lot easier.

Backstage at competitions is a wild, chaotic scene every time. There’s a constant buzz, and it’s packed with athletes in various stages of preparation—some are just lying down on the floor, looking for any free space they can find to relax or focus. Meanwhile, the more seasoned pros have figured out ways to set up their own “royal lounges,” complete with makeshift setups that give them a bit of comfort amid the crowd.

The atmosphere is intense but also fascinating; you get a real mix of adrenaline, nerves, and camaraderie as everyone gets ready for the stage. When the backstage area has good lighting, it’s a gift because you can capture some incredibly dynamic shots. From candid moments of athletes warming up or chatting to close-ups of the focused expressions, there’s always something visually interesting happening.

Often, while watching athletes at competitions, I wonder which non-competing ones could look good on stage. Over 17 years, I've seen many: some transition to masters, others appear occasionally, and some leave at their peak.

In 2013, at the Russian Championship in Perm, I noticed Maxim Kurilenko—at 188 cm tall and 125 kg, he was hard to miss. I was sure he would become Mr. Abs, but unfortunately, after 2014, he stopped competing and quietly lives online, posting only one photo a year.

I found an interview with Maxim: he lives near Chelyabinsk and has been in sports since childhood. During his career, he worked in a fire department and trained using the Mentzer system. As he approached competitions, he increased his training sessions and followed an unconventional diet focused on dairy products.

I wrote to Maxim to check in on him. He replied that while injuries weren't the main reason for his departure from competition, he simply lacks motivation but continues to train for himself. When I asked about current bodybuilders who interest him, he said none, as the sport has degraded.

It’s a pity that many promising athletes lose interest in competing. Thank you, Maxim, for your response, and I wish you good health!

I’m always thrilled to see how my athletes grow and evolve over the years. When I first worked with Alex, he was only 20—a young talent with big dreams and incredible potential. Even then, he showed remarkable dedication and skill, pushing himself to new limits. Now, seeing him as a seasoned athlete and a world champion fills me with pride. Watching his journey from a promising young competitor to a true champion has been inspiring, and I can’t wait to see what more he’ll accomplish.
