Of all the magnificent statues in Volgograd, there was no other that caused an impression in me as this statue from Mamayev Kurgan memorial. This statue represents the pain and sorrow of Mother Russia, as she holds the fallen heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad in her arms. The man's face is covered by a blanket; removing the unique features of a particular man, but instead, adding the many faces of the people who lost their lives during the battle. The motherland cries for her children, but embraces with tenderness their sacrifice.
The Battle of Stalingrad is considered as the turning point in WWII, as the Soviet Union's Red Army stood their ground against the N**i Army. In their attempt to conquest the Volga River and the russian oil factories, the N**is never thought they were about to enter a war zone like they never seen before. The harsh conditions, including, the weather, the lack of resources needed to sustain the N**i army and the bravery and heroism of thousands of Russians, played a fundamental role in the victory of the Soviet Union. Both colossal armies had no intentions of giving up and even killed those who refused to fight or flee the battle. For many historians, this was the West's last chance to defeat Adolf Hi**er and prevent the imposition of a fascist government worldwide. The fierceness and cruelty of the battle meant the lost of almost 2 million people, including soldiers, innocent civilians, prisoners and children.
