๐ ๐ฃ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ โ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐น๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด
This hyperlapse is made from around ๐ญ๐ฑ๐ฌ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐, with the beautiful ๐ฃ๐น๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ rising into the frame โ the famous Seven Sisters, a young cluster of hot blue stars that has been recognised and celebrated by cultures around the world since ancient times.
I couldnโt resist trying to capture the Perseids alongside them. The biggest challenge was light pollution โ both while shooting and, even more, while processing the images afterwards.
But what a magnificent show it was.
One thing that struck me while processing the sequence was how many meteors the camera had captured that I had ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ป๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ป๐ฎ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ. Some were faint enough that they only became apparent after bringing out the detail in post-processing.
And that, unfortunately, says something about what we are losing to light pollution.
Not so long ago โ even 30 years ago โ people could look up from many places and see a much richer night sky. During a good Perseid peak, it wasnโt only the occasional spectacular fireball that made the shower special. It was the constant appearance of smaller, fainter meteors too.
Today, most people are amazed when a big one streaks across the sky, while much of the rest of the show simply disappears into the artificial glow.
A meteor shower producing perhaps ๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฟ under dark skies can still be happening above us โ we just donโt get to see all of it anymore.
The camera, thankfully, can reveal a little of what our eyes are now missing. โจ
