The amazing ABE siblings during warm up.

Congratulations to the Japanese team for being the 2023 World Champions.

It was awesome seeing them so happy in their celebrations.

Teams Match 7 : NIIZOE vs PINOT

Judo fans around the world got the climatic finish their wanted, the Golden Score match to determine the Mixed Teams Champions of the world.

Luck should have it that the GS match was given to the -70kg Women’s category. Niizoe, the latest world champion vs Pinot, who looked unbeatable in their earlier encounter in Match 2.

The match did not disappoint in terms of excitement and drama. 5:15 into the match, Pinot went in for a Kouchi maki-komi for an ippon and the French fan erupted! France are the new World champions!! Or so we thought. The video referee later reversed the decision and gave Pinot a shido for a leg grab. I haven’t seen the video so I am not sure how obvious it was.

No score, the match continues.

At 6:45, with 2 shidos against her name, Pinot attempted an arm bar during a newaza exchange. Nothing came off it until the video referee asked for play to stop to review the last sequence. Again, in a dramatic change of events Pinot was given her 3rd Shido for attempting an armbar when play hasn’t deemed to transition into newaza (as Niizoe was still on her feet - this is my interpretation as i haven’t seen the video nor heard the commentary). So with 3 shidos it was Hansoku-maki for Pinot and the win goes to Japan!!

I think the judo community would agree that France lost the match rather Japan won the match. In the end, the record books will show that Japan are the World’s mixed Team Champions.

Congratulations to Japan and credit to France for the gracious loss.

Teams Match 6 : Funakubo vs Cysique

It all cane down to the sixth and final match. If France wins, they are World Champions. If Japan wins, it goes to a golden score match. You couldn’t have scripted for a more dramatic finish to the 8th and final day of the 2023 World Championships in Doha.

The responsibility for their teams fell on the -57kg players, Haruka Funakubo of Japan and Sarah Leonor Cysique for France.

Cysique came out with all guns blazing and looked really good! She manages to catch Funakubo with an uchimata for a wazari within the first minute.

France takes an early lead and must be feeling really good right now.

Then, in a dramatic turn of events, Funakubo manages to capitalize on a newaza exchange to trap Cysique for the winning Osekomi!!

Japan ties the match 3-3. We go into the golden score match! Wow! Just wow! What a Teams Final! The Arena was buzzing!!

Teams Match 5 : Saito vs Terhec

Saito needs a win to keep Japan alive. The pressure must be tremendous for the young player.

Again, it was a grudge match with the bout going to Saito with 3 shidos against Terhec.

France still maintains a 3-2 lead, only needing one more win to get the gold!

Teams Match 4 : Segawa vs Hayme

Down 2 - 1, Japan needs to keep the momentum going. Next up, Maya Segawa vs Coralie Hayme.

Unfortunately neither player gave an inch and the match ended with 3 Shidos to Segawa for passivity.

France leads 3-1, only needing one more win to get the gold!

Teams Match 3 : Tajima vs Hambou

Down 2 - 0, Japan really needed a win in the 3rd match between Goki Tajima and Maxime-Gael Ngayap Hambou in the -90kg category.

Tajima can out aggressive and put together a number of attacks scoring a huge wazari to keep Japan’s hopes alive.

Teams Match 2 : Niizoe vs Pinot

The 2nd match had Japan’s recently crown world champion at -70kg Saki Niizoe up against Margaux Pinot.

The French players seem to lift to ‘beast mode’ during team events and Pinot came out strong. She countered Saki’s uchimata for a wazari and caught her with a beautiful arm bar for the Ippon submission.

The French team builds on their lead!

Drama in the +100kg Finals in Doha. A great match between Teddy Rainer and Inal Tasoev.

In golden score, Inal countered Teddy for what seemed like a score but was not given. Official explanation was that the counter attack was not technically a ‘judo technique’ and this not given.

I am sure the judo community with be talking about this in the years to come.

Congratulations to Teddy for winning his incredible 11th World Championships.

A stacked field in the +100kg category at the 2023 Worlds in Doha. Saito, Kageura, Rainer and Tushishvili …. and this is just on one side of the draw!!

A treat in the heavy weight class!

Sanshiro Murao was in great form today but succumbed to Lasha Bekauri in the semifinals via an unconventional throw. This is his bronze medal fight against Ivan Felipe Silva Morales of CUB. Murao is a class player right through till the end.
