From one eclipse to the next. Last night, there was a partial lunar eclipse, and a particularly deep one at that, visible here in Portugal. It was a bit touch-and-go as the weather forecast showed clouds around my area, so I took a drive out to Cabo Espichel, where it looked a bit better (but still not completely clear). Turns out the sky cleared up just as the partial phase began! Due to orbital mechanics, we experience a few 'eclipse seasons' each year, where one eclipse (solar or lunar) is often followed by the another in a few weeks.

After the solar eclipse, I was on a road trip around north-western Spain and the north of Portugal, so I didn't have as much time to review and process my photos until I got back home on Tuesday. You've probably already seen tons of eclipse photos from other photographers by now, but here are mine. I'm still in awe of the phenomenon I witnessed, and managed to capture on camera, given that it was my first time!

On 12 August 2026, I had the opportunity to be Spain for the solar eclipse. I have seen and experienced some partial eclipses before, but this my first time for a total solar eclipse.

I've read everything I could about preparing and photographing the eclipse, and practiced at home, but On the day itself, a number of things still went wrong, and I missed a few shots, but I still managed to get a few good ones, which I'm pretty chuffed about.

Totality is unlike anything I've ever experienced before. Even though people who've seen it try to describe it to you, seeing it first-hand is just unbelievable.

One thing of note, is that during totality, one of the prominences (the glowing red/pink filaments around the edge of the sun, visible only when the main solar disc is blocked by the moon), was massive and you could even see it with the naked eye. I couldn't believe it when I pulled up the images on my iPad to review them.

I've still got lots of photos to go through and process, but here's a few I've gotten on the day (plus some others)

The preparation for the Solar Eclipse next week! Test shot of the sun taken through my telescope, and testing all the equipment and my imaging plan before we set off to the Castile & León region.

"Carrying the Light"
It's incredibly humbling, for me to be standing at a site that's 6000 years old. This is a Neolithic dolmen (burial mound), that was converted into a Christian chapel in the 17th century. I'm standing where countless others have stood before me, looking up at the same night sky, catching ancient light from stars millions of light-years away.

IC 1396A The Elephant Trunk nebula, located in the constellation of Cepheus, about 2,400 light years away. This is the result of 8.3h from Santa Susana, a Bortle 4 site, significantly darker than my backyard.

This has been an elusive target for me, which I've attempted to image many times over the last few years, only to be disappointed because it is quite dim and either needs a LOT of integration (exposure) time, or imaging from a dark sky site.

The Cygnus Wall portion of NGC 7000, the North America Nebula. With the new Optolong L-Synergy filter, I am now able to collect S-II data, and produce the full Hubble-style SHO colour palette. I also used a new 0.7x Reducer for my Askar FRA400 telescope, increasing the speed of the optics to f/3.9 and a wider focal length of 280mm which lets me frame this up a bit better showing the nebulosity around that area.
