Nestled in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains lies a picturesque valley and a lake, Lough Tay, one of the most photographed locations in Wicklow. The stunning scenery of the lake surrounded by the mountains makes it one of the most iconic locations in Ireland’s Ancient East.

Lough Tay is fed by the Cloghoge River and then drains into Lough Dan, located to the south. The beach on the northern side consists of bright white sand. The white sand was imported by the Guinness family who owned Luggala Estate, which runs through part of the Lough Tay area. The dark peaty water of the lake, combined with its oval shape and frothy white sand at the top, makes it appear as if you’re overlooking a large pint of Guinness, surrounded by green, rolling mountains.

The best viewing point to see Lough Tay is along the Military Road above, at the junction with the Wicklow Way. From there, enjoy the stunning views over the Wicklow Mountains. NOTE: Lough Tay itself is on private property and cannot be visited.

Imagine an island with turquoise blue waters, secret coves, soft golden sands, lush green foliage, rugged mountains, picturesque villages and a vibrant capital city. Now drop that island in the sea only a couple of hours flight from most European cities... that's Mallorca (also known as Majorca) in a nutshell. The island and its capital, Palma, are overflowing with character, while its beaches are famous all around the world, making it one of the most sought-after summer destinations.

Generously furnished with luxury hotels and villas, Mallorca is also one of the world's sailing hotspots. An island steeped in history, Mallorca boasts charming villages, historic sights, an artisan and cultural scene and popular events taking place throughout the year.

If relaxing is your thing, grab a sun lounger at a beach club, hop on a boat trip or stroll through the old streets in Palma for some leisurely shopping. Just don't expect to relax for too long as there are theme and water parks for the whole family to enjoy, as well as watersports, thousands of things to do and all the serious walking and cycling you could care to do on holiday. And, if you've not overdone the daytime, there's always the bustling nightlife to finish you off.

As you drive along the lakeside road from Baveno towards Verbania, you can’t miss the delightful little village of Feriolo on the Borromean Gulf, with its row of brightly coloured houses along the shore and boats moored on the lake. The Feriolo lakefront is one of the most picturesque on Lake Maggiore, with its beach, unassuming houses and little balconies. The village is especially atmospheric at night, when the lights are reflected in the water of the lake.

Today Feriolo is an popular visitor centre, especially with campers, but its origins go far back into the past; many archaeological finds from prehistoric times have come to light in the district. The remains of the ancient castle on the promontory just in front of the village testify to the settlement’s strategic importance in the Roman period as a stopover for troops on their way to the Alpine passes.

The little oratory of the Virgin of the "Scarpia" is an 18th century building constructed against the rock of the mountainside, and contains an image of the Virgin datable to the 16th century. The fine church of San Carlo is decorated with frescoes, statues and stained glass windows. A curiosity: a mark on the façade of the church records the level reached by the lake in 1868, when the water rose seven metres higher than normal. The perimeter wall of the terrace bears the date commemorating the flood of 1993.

Lastly, the episode of the “submerged village” recalls the tragedy occurring in 1897, when during the construction of the new harbour a landslide hit part of the village, which sank into the lake; the remains of the houses that were destroyed can still be seen 18 metres below the lake surface.
