Yesterday we made the difficult decision, in consultation with Achi’s doctors, to let him rest. We wanted to thank all of you that were with us through the happy times and the sad, the incredible trips and epic adventures to the heartbreaking hospital stays. It meant so much to us sharing the happy times with you, and all of the messages and comments letting us know how much you enjoyed his journey. And likewise it meant so much to us during the hard times when he was sick, when your messages of love and support helped carry us through.

As many of you will know, Achi had a leishmania relapse in early September after about 15 months of remission. We treated again, and things seemed to be going well until the new year. That’s when we learned the parasite had already come back, having become resistant to the medication. We attempted to treat again in January, and did see some small improvements to his test results, but unfortunately they did not translate into improving quality of life, as they had every time before. Additionally, some new complications arose this time due to prolonged treatment, and over the last couple of weeks it had become clear that we weren’t going to get another miracle.

While we wanted nothing more than to keep fighting, we’d already asked so much of him, and we knew that he was tired. That it was time to let him have peace while he was still Achi. While he still had his dignity.

You’ll always be in our hearts Achinho, loved forever, gone but never forgotten. You were taken far too soon, and we miss you so much 💔

Happy trick or treat time guys💀
Achi is doing great with the new treatment. His creatine is back to normal and the albumin is going up. So, we thought about doing a Halloween photoshoot but couldn’t decide for a custom outfit. Which one is more scarier?

It’s super rainy in Porto… so the dog raincoat is back🥹 Achi tolerates it a little bit more than last year although.
He’s doing better, and has put a couple kilograms back on. Energy, health and shenanigans seem to be improving🥹.
He had a consultation with a dog nutritionist to check a new diet for Leishmania and kidney disease. The toughest cattle dog, this one.
Wishing you a great weekend.

Achi’s update: 🥺
It’s been a very tough couple of months with lots of ups and downs in Achi’s condition. He would have improved numbers for a while, and be doing well, only for them to get worse again. After a few cycles of this things seem to be improving now for the better and the hope is he is beginning to stabilize. His creatinine and albumin have improved to nearly normal levels, which suggests that the kidney damage while present might not be as severe as we had initially feared. His proteinuria remains severe, which is our biggest hurdle right now. However that as well has slightly improved.
He’s finished his primary treatment for his leishmania, but due to concerns about it not finishing the job he’s been started on another drug for that as well.

We hope the combined effects will continue to improve his condition. His recovery has been by all accounts nothing short of miraculous. He was supposed to not be here by now. But he is, and doing better than anyone expected. We’re so grateful for the time we’ve gotten with him and the fact that it seems likely we’ll get at least a few months more. If we’re very lucky he could even survive until his next leishmania relapse, which is hard to predict but could in theory be even a year or two away.

Thank you to everyone that has been wishing him well and asking about him, it really means a lot to us. 🤍
