Ever since I was a little girl, there has been that primitive sense of Waterlust. Only at the age of 25 though, I got into a passionate love affair with the ocean. From the very first time I went snorkeling in Bunaken, I was lost. After many years of diving, I decided to start shooting underwater fairly recently. My photography skills were a bit rusty, while I hadn't been handling a decent camera

since my years as an Audiovisual Arts student. Also, to be honest, just looking at the equipment already scared me, so it took me some time to get used to it all. Meanwhile, while looking for and photographing these intriguing patterns I'm the happiest person on earth. To me, there's simply no better place than down there...

When not travelling and diving, I wander the wastelands, riverbanks and traintrack borders of Gent, my hometown. I stop where nobody else does, I look, I frame and I shoot the beauty of nature. And every time I dare to think there's nothing new to discover, there actually is...

Snorkeling off a beach in Baleal, I was welcomed by a swaying display of Japanese wireweed, sea lettuce and golden kelp. The unfortunately out of focus Sargassum fish was a totally unexpected surprise. So unexpected I actually thought I had been staring at a weirdly discoloured fluorescent piece of seaweed underwater. And thenI saw the shot on a big screen...

Near Mértola in Alentejo, there's a deserted copper and sulfur mine called Mina de São Domingos. It was exploited as far back as the Phoenicians and Romans. The mine was booming in modern times as one of Europe's largest mining operations from the 1850s until the 1960s.
It is one of these surreal landscapes one never forgets. The color of the contaminated water in the ancient pits is mesmerisingly beautiful.

Have you ever started to cry when scrutinising ancient rocks? There's a word for it and it isn't "weirdo".
Yirah is a Hebrew word, originally meaning "feeling a deep awe, even a trembling fear for the divine"
In the 18th century though, the Romatics softened the edges of the concept and it became the word for feeling a profound spiritual connection or overwhelming, all-encompassing awe when observing nature.
And yes, that comes with tears.
