Ruïne De Nijenbeek
HISTORY
The Nijenbeek is a relatively young ruin. On April 12, 1945, the Allies shelled the castle from Gorssel with grenades and tanks to drive out the Germans who were in the structure. When this was successful, the Allies crossed the river to continue their advance to liberate the Netherlands. They left the castle largely destroyed.

The current ruin was built in the 13th century as a Donjon (defensive castle). From the 16th century to the 19th century it was inhabited. The Nijenbeek then consisted of a castle with an outer bailey.
