When told me he had secured media access to the mosque for a client and asked if I was interested, I was like, “Are you kidding me?” Of course I’m in!
It was the first morning of Ramadan. Daria and I have been driving down from Ajman, getting into the car at 3:45am. Tired? Yes. But the excitement washed it all away.
When we arrived, we had to take a side entrance. The view you’re seeing in this image greeted me right after I passed security and the gate. I couldn’t focus on what the security guard was telling us, as I was already pondering how to take this shot.
Andy told us, “Let’s go quickly, before they turn off the lights”—and so they went, while only I stood behind. I set up my tripod, put on my tilt-shift lens to get rid of any distortion, and waited for them to disappear behind the corner.
I just love how the blue illumination mirrors the patterns in the sky. This iconic mosque appears as a reflection of the heavens above.Â
The colour of the illumination depends on the phases of the moon. For me, the blue hue provided the perfect contrast to the golden lamps illuminating the pathway. It has become my favourite photo from the trip.
Now I’m pleased to announce that the image was just rewarded with Gold at the Budapest International Foto Awards.
Funny how the most exhausting mornings make the most lasting memories, don’t they?
