MOM, WHERE ARE YOU?
When my daughter was born, I started taking countless photos of her. I’m a photographer after all.
Her first days, first months, our home, our walks, her little habits, those funny facial expressions. I wanted to preserve everything that felt so ordinary, because those are the things that disappear the fastest.
I turned all those photographs into a big photo album that she absolutely loves looking through.
One day, as we were flipping through its pages together, she suddenly asked:
“Mom, where are you?”
And that’s when it hit me.
She was right. Out of nearly 200 photographs, maybe 20 included me. In most of the others, she was either on her own or with her dad.
She was only three years old, but she had already noticed that I was missing from our family’s story.
And it feels so unfair.
Because a mum is the person who’s there for almost every ordinary moment. The one who carries you, feeds you, comforts you, plays with you, takes you for walks, puts you to bed. The one who’s quietly present in everyday life.
Yet in so many family photographs she’s almost invisible.
Because mom is usually the one behind the camera.
One day, our children will grow up. They’ll probably remember some of those moments.
But they won’t be able to see what their mom looked like when they were just a few months old. How she held them in her arms. How they lay together on the sofa. How they walked together, laughed together or simply spent an ordinary afternoon side by side.
I think it’s so important to step in front of the camera every now and then.
So that one day, when our child asks “Mom, where are you?”, we’ll have an answer.
