A fantastic week spent aboard HWDT’s Silurian.

Despite sub-optimal weather for much of the week i.e. rough seas, rain and mist, we still managed to spot four species of cetacean: minke whale, Risso’s dolphins, common dolphins and harbour porpoise. As we travelled from Ullapool to Lewis, the Shiants, North Uist, Skye, Rona, then back to the mainland, we also logged a fantastic number and variety of birds including puffins, guillemot, black guillemot, fulmar, gannets, great skua, arctic skua, manx shearwaters, various gulls, cormorants, shags, common and arctic terns, and divers (red-throated, black throated and great northern). We also surveyed creels and boats, and listened using a hydrophone to underwater sounds including the sound made by snapping shrimps (a cavitation bubble forms when the shrimp closes its claw creating a sound of volume up to 218 decibels!).

A huge thank you to Hannah, Ferghal, Lenny and Will 🙏, and to citizen scientist volunteers Nick, Diane, Amanda, Chantal and Jayne.

If you fancy a working holiday aboard Silurian, surveying marine mammals and birds, check out HWDT’s website.

First night aboard HWDT’s Silurian. Up early and out for a walk, to stretch the legs, before commencing surveying for cetaceans and birds in remote parts of the north-west highlands. Looking forward to seeing what we can find 🐬🐳🫍🦭🦅📷.

5/6/2026. The largest group of bottlenose dolphins I have seen from my local coast; an estimated 40+ dolphins swam past Macduff this afternoon, heading east. Thanks to Angela and Liam for initially spotting these off Cullen 2.5hrs earlier.

All photos taken from shore.

Disturbing or harming whales and dolphins is a wildlife crime.

If you see whales or dolphins being disturbed i.e. interaction that changes their behaviour, please record it as best as you can and report it to Police Scotland. This includes vessels spending too long with cetaceans e.g. more than 15 minutes.

This applies to paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, jetskis and boats including but not limited to fishing vessels, creel boats, speedboats and research RIBs.

I've been approached a couple of times in the past few weeks, while watching the sea, asking what I look out for when trying to spot cetaceans.

I basically scan the sea and look out for anything that 'doesn't fit'. What 'doesn't fit' may just be a cormorant going for a dive, the splash from a diving gannet or a bottling seal but if you're lucky it will be a cetacean 🐬🐋.

Keep a lookout for:
1) spouts (blows)
2) birds (flying above the water / diving into the water)
3) surface disturbances / splashes
4) body (head, fins, back, tail, ...)

Despite watching for cetaceans for a number of years, from land and sea, every time I spot one it’s still as exciting.

1/6/2026. While watching the sea this afternoon from Kinnaird Head, Fraserburgh, I caught a glimpse of two orca fins out on the horizon. I then briefly saw the orca from Rosehearty.

I next went to Troup Head, where it was good to find Nick and Charlotte (aka Finding Fins) already with eyes on the water. Here we confirmed we had three bulls. The orca were closer at Troup Head but still c.3km distant.

I finally saw the orca again from Macduff and then Whitehills by which time we were watching them in heavy rain.

Edit: bulls are Úlfur, Trinkie and Summer.

31/5/2026, distant harbour porpoises and distant Risso's dolphins seen today from Kinnaird Head.

We initially spotted a group of around 9 Risso's dolphins breaching repeatedly off Cairnbulg but alas we were watching from Kinnaird Head, >4km away. The Risso's dolphins then travelled past Kinnaird Head to Rosehearty, and then back, but always 2-3km from shore.

All photos taken from shore (large crops).
