🇵🇹 O esquilo-vermelho (𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴) é um pequeno roedor presente nas florestas coníferas e caducifólias da Europa e da Ásia. Em Portugal Continental ocorre sobretudo nas regiões do Centro e Norte, associadas a áreas florestais mais bem conservadas. Apresenta pelagem ruiva ou acastanhada no dorso, contrastando com o ventre branco. As orelhas são facilmente reconhecíveis pelos tufos de pelos longos, que ajudam a reduzir a perda de calor durante os períodos mais frios. Espécie ágil e arborícola, passa a maior parte da vida nas copas das árvores, deslocando-se entre ramos com grande destreza graças à sua cauda longa e equilibradora. Durante a época de maior disponibilidade alimentar, armazena sementes e frutos em cavidades ou enterrados no solo, contribuindo involuntariamente para a regeneração natural das florestas. 🐿️🏔️
🇬🇧 The red squirrel (𝘚𝘤𝘪𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘶𝘭𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴) is a small rodent found in coniferous and deciduous forests across Europe and Asia. In mainland Portugal, it occurs mainly in the central and northern regions, associated with well-preserved woodland habitats. It has a reddish or brownish coat on the back, contrasting with a white underside. Its ears are easily recognisable by the long tufts of hair, which help reduce heat loss during colder periods. An agile and highly arboreal species, it spends most of its life in the tree canopy, moving between branches with great dexterity thanks to its long, balancing tail. During periods of food abundance, it stores seeds and fruits in tree cavities or buried in the soil, unintentionally contributing to forest regeneration and biodiversity. 🐿️🏔️
