𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲?⁣
⁣
I did an experiment: without thinking, I asked myself this very question. Actually, before you read any further, I invite you to pause for a moment, close your eyes, and try this thought experiment yourself – so we can compare findings.😏⁣
⁣
Here’s what immediately jumped to mind for me:⁣
⁣
– a woman gently hugging herself, smiling a soft, loving smile⁣
⁣
– silky face creams and a quiet off-screen whisper: “because you deserve it”⁣
⁣
– a bar of velvety dark chocolate⁣
⁣
– a pink, fluffy heart-shaped cushion⁣
⁣
– another woman walking home with a bouquet of flowers she bought for herself⁣
⁣
Wow - quite an ads-inspired Pinterest board. All these images share a certain polished tone, a style, a carefully chosen palette.⁣
⁣
Smooth skin. Beautiful light. Perfectly arranged. No clutter, no mess, no dirt. Also – no room to breathe or break the script.⁣
⁣
I know that image, and the feeling behind it, all too well. I’ve seen so many people I work with use some kind of version of it to measure themselves against, to box themselves in, creating suffering. It still holds a strong presence in my psyche, as the quick thought experiment has proved.⁣
⁣
Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to the other side. Curious about where self-love will take us if we dare to go beyond the surface of the known – letting go of how it should look, surrendering the comfort of the Pinterest board and instead trusting how it feels. What it might reveal about our deepest desires and longings.⁣
⁣
This image here says it better than I ever could. It emerged through a spontaneous exploration, one that wasn’t planned as “self-love,” but became exactly that. Can you see it too?⁣

𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗺𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴⁣

What comes up for you when you read the words?⁣
⁣
Is there terror, excitement, longing, numbness, irritation… or something else?⁣
⁣
The way I see it, an experiment of unmasking is the essence of a holistic photography session.⁣
⁣
An experiment – because we never quite know what we’ll discover once we set an intention to go beyond our pre-conceived ideas of how we should move, look, behave in order to feel worthy of being seen.⁣
⁣
Unmasking – because we welcome the softening of our defences, allowing for a gentle unweaving of our habitual ways to let something else come through. Our essence, soul, spirit, aliveness, flow – whatever you may want to call it.⁣
⁣
Even when you are not ready or willing to put a particular mask down in front of the camera – and I would never push for that as a guide – you may still wish to acknowledge it as a layer of protection. And in doing so, create a little more space between you and the part it’s guarding.⁣
⁣
Sometimes, the mask feels compelled to share some of its story: how it came to be, what it’s been trying to do for you. This can be deeply connecting, touching, even healing.⁣
⁣
Other times, it may feel playful to intentionally invite different masks to step into the frame. ⁣
⁣
The Nice One, the Entertainer, the One Who Has It All Together, the Shy One, the Serious Business Woman, the Creative, the Sensual Goddess…⁣
⁣
There are so many. Each holding a unique flavor. Sometimes they just want to be seen for who they are. It can feel freeing, even delightful, to let them take up space and have their own moment of celebration and acknowledgment.⁣
⁣
Can it feel uncomfortable? It surely can. Every experiment asks for courage, and courage requires vulnerability.⁣
⁣
But there is a payoff – an opportunity to meet yourself kindly, curiously, creatively – in the less familiar spaces. Reclaiming more of your wholeness.⁣
⁣

A time that can feel both exciting and also loaded with expectations and subtle pressures:⁣
⁣
to be more expansive, festive or productive, enjoy more, feel more, grow more…⁣
⁣
Each one of us has our own version of the ‘more’, perhaps even quite a few of those.⁣
⁣
Yet, when you tune into yourself - listen to your felt sense, the movement of your breath, the tone of your thoughts -⁣
𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿?⁣
⁣
Beyond the picture of how you should be doing it, what is real and alive?⁣
⁣
Tuning into these questions myself over the last days, I’ve discovered many layers I didn’t want to fully acknowledge:⁣
numbness, despair, even a sense of bitter, frustrated hopelessness.⁣
⁣
𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦?⁣
- a part of me whispered, panicked.⁣

But as I stayed with the bitterness, other voices began to emerge…⁣
A longing for joy and creativity, connection, play, and more - waaaaay more - colour!🌈⁣

I’ve been neglecting these needs lately. No wonder my inner landscape has turned bleak.⁣

I used to be quite sceptical of the 8th of March, kind of frowning upon it - this of course reflected my own relationship with the feminine. The more healing I brought to it, the more I’ve learnt to see the International Women’s Day as a beautiful occasion and opportunity to celebrate HER.

It is not a coincidence that most of my photography work happens with women or men who we are in touch with their feminine side. Photography for me is very much about joy, delight and pleasure - also, fluidity, intuition, emotions and spontaneity, the very qualities I associate with Anima, the feminine part of our psyche.

SHE comes out to play in these spaces - and this is so beautiful and DELICIOUS to witness and play with.

The wind and ocean are alive with wild energy today in Ericeira.⁣
⁣
I went to the coast to watch the waves and found it almost impossible to leave.⁣
⁣
Something in me was utterly captivated by the raw power of the elements: the rough play of air currents, sudden salty splashes leaving cool, briny traces on my skin.⁣
⁣
I wasn’t alone in my enchantment. Passersby paused to gaze at the swirling masses of water and foam, their eyes alight with a shared sense of wonder. A few even screamed in excitement as a particularly strong wave crashed into the shore, shooting a column of white foam skyward. I didn’t scream but felt the urge to sing—and so I did.⁣
⁣
There, on the coast, I remembered a long-held dream: to hold holistic photography sessions in stormy weather.⁣
⁣
In photography, storms are often seen as obstacles, and we chase the sweet, sunny, predictable weather. But, as in life, storms offer a rare invitation for soulful adventure, profound discovery, and stepping beyond the familiar—beyond our carefully curated and controlled version of ourselves.⁣
