Fala-nos sobre este local e o porquê de estarmos aqui.

Gosto especialmente deste espaço. Era um lugar central onde me encontrava com os amigos, daqui íamos para a Feira da Ladra, era o meu caminho preferido, ou seguíamos para a Ginjinha e para o Rossio.
Há aqui uma proximidade evidente com imensas culturas: este jardim está rodeado de bairros onde se pode ouvir, cheirar e falar de mil formas diferentes, entrar em restaurantes e descobrir lojas com artigos de uma diversidade cultural incrível.
E depois há esta beleza que nos envolve, a Faculdade de Medicina, o Goethe-Institut, e ali mais atrás, o Jardim do Torel.

Tell us about this place and why we’re here.

I’m particularly fond of this place. It used to be a central meeting point where I would get together with friends. From here, we would head to Feira da Ladra, which was my favourite route, or make our way to A Ginjinha and Rossio.
There’s also a remarkable proximity to so many different cultures here. This garden is surrounded by neighbourhoods where you can hear, smell and speak in countless different ways, step into restaurants and discover shops filled with items from an incredible range of cultural backgrounds.
And then there’s the beauty that surrounds us: the Faculty of Medicine, the Goethe-Institut, and just behind it, Jardim do Torel.

Como a paisagem e a luz de Lisboa te influenciaram?

Quem sempre viveu em Lisboa sabe que a luz é importante nesta cidade, influencia o estado de espírito das pessoas que vivem nela.

Como descreves Lisboa em três palavras?

Liberdade, luz, camadas (de tempo).

Como achas que a gentrificação afecta Lisboa?

Afecta para o pior do nosso tempo. A gentrificação torna as cidades todas iguais, transforma-as em parques temáticos.

O que significa Lisboa para ti?

Significa a minha vida! Desde muito miúdo que ia com a minha mãe à Baixa quase todos os dias. Ou seja, é uma cidade que está dentro de mim. Se um dia me fosse embora a cidade iria sempre comigo.

How have Lisbon’s landscape and light influenced you?

Anyone who has always lived in Lisbon knows how important the light is in this city. It influences the mood and state of mind of the people who live here.

How would you describe Lisbon in three words?

Freedom, light, and layers (of time).

How do you think gentrification affects Lisbon?

I think it represents one of the worst aspects of our time. Gentrification makes cities all look the same; it turns them into theme parks.

What does Lisbon mean to you?

It means my life. Since I was very young, I used to go to Baixa with my mother almost every day. So it’s a city that lives inside me. Even if I were to leave one day, the city would always go with me.

O que te faz mais falta de Lisboa?

Aquilo de que sinto mais falta em Lisboa é de uma data de pessoas que já não estão, porque faziam parte da minha vida na cidade ou eram da minha geração, alguns mais velhos e outros até mais novos, pessoas que eram até ícones de Lisboa, como o João Ribas. Eram pessoas sempre presentes em concerto, numa certa vida de Lisboa, e já se foram embora.
Outra coisa de que também às vezes sinto falta é do tempo que passou. Perde-se um bocado o tempo, eu costumo dizer que o tempo é a cena mais devastadora porque apaga tudo, apaga-te os sítios, apaga-te as pessoas. Sinto falta de certo tipo de sítios, até um bocado old school, é lógico que as coisas têm de evoluir, mas às vezes a preservação desses sítios é importante. Eu tenho 60 anos e uma coisa de que me vou apercebendo é de que as pessoas vão ficando cada vez mais isoladas, porque vão perdendo as pessoas à sua volta, vai perdendo os sítios, vão perdendo as referências.

Tens algum hábito ou rotina ligado a um ponto de Lisboa?

Aqui em Alvalade, quando vivia aqui, era o Helsínquia. Também gosto de andar a pé e fazia a Almirante Reis, saía de casa e ia até à Baixa. Gosto bué da baixa. A minha mãe era costureira, modista, então eu ia muitas vezes com ela à baixa, comprar botões, tecidos e sempre curti isso.

What do you miss most about Lisbon?

What I miss most about Lisbon is a number of people who are no longer here, because they were part of my life in the city or belonged to my generation — some older, some even younger — people who were almost icons of Lisbon, like João Ribas. They were always present at concerts, in a certain Lisbon way of life, and they’ve since passed away.
Another thing I sometimes miss is time itself. You kind of lose time; I often say that time is the most devastating thing, because it erases everything — it erases places, it erases people. I miss a certain kind of places, a bit old school. Of course things have to evolve, but sometimes preserving those places is important. I’m 60 years old, and one thing I’ve come to realise is that people become increasingly isolated, because they keep losing the people around them, they lose places, they lose their references.

Do you have any habit or routine connected to a place in Lisbon?

Here in Alvalade, when I lived here, there was the Helsínquia. I also like walking a lot — I used to walk from Almirante Reis, leaving home and going all the way to Baixa. I really love Baixa. My mother was a dressmaker, a seamstress, so I often used to go with her to Baixa to buy buttons and fabrics, and I’ve always loved that.

Como a vida e a luz de Lisboa te influenciaram?

A luz, em relação ao Porto, por exemplo, torna a cidade bastante aberta. A vida desta cidade agora já não a conheço tanto. Como é que te hei-de explicar, já não é a minha cidade, em que passei desde meados dos anos 80 até 2005 basicamente na rua, a sair e tocar e viver a cidade. Também dei essa oportunidade de sair a mim próprio e agora a cidade mudou.

Qual o teu bairro de eleição?

É Alvalade, mas eu não sou daqui, só vivi cá mais tarde, mas não sou de cá. Na altura do RRV vinha aqui ter com o Ribas e com o Samuel, mas eu era ali de Palhavã, sim morava entre a Praça de Espanha e Sete Rios. Depois andei no Dom Pedro V e a seguir fui para a António Arroio, e depois com a cena do RRV que era ao pé do Dom Pedro V comecei a conhecer outras pessoas e também parava muito ali na Padre Francisco Álvares, que era perto de um jardim ao pé da Cruz Vermelha, e isso também me deu essa cena de conhecer malta da música. Na altura aconteceu uma coisa que deixou um pouco de acontecer que era haver concertos nos liceus, principalmente na António Arroio. Nasci no Castelo, sou mesmo Lisboeta, aliás tinha feito uma jura de que nunca sairia de Lisboa, de que nunca me iria casar, de que nunca iria ter filhos, mas pronto, ah ah ah!

How have Lisbon’s way of life and light influenced you?

The light, compared with Porto for example, makes the city feel much more open. As for life in the city, I don’t really know it as well anymore. How can I explain it? It’s no longer quite the city I knew, where from the mid-1980s until around 2005 I basically lived out on the streets — going out, playing music and experiencing the city. And gave myself the opportunity to go out at night, and in the meantime the city has changed.

Which is your favourite neighbourhood?

It’s Alvalade, although I’m not actually from here; I only lived here later on. Back in the RRV days I used to come here to meet Ribas and Samuel, but I was really from the Palhavã area — I lived between Praça de Espanha and Sete Rios.
I went to Dom Pedro V high school and then to António Arroio. Later, because of the RRV scene, which was near Dom Pedro V, I started meeting other people. I also spent a lot of time around Padre Francisco Álvares Street, near a garden close to the Red Cross, and that was another place where I got to know people involved in music.
At the time there was something that has largely disappeared: concerts in secondary schools, especially at António Arroio. I was born in Castelo, so I’m a true Lisboeta. In fact, I had sworn that I would never leave Lisbon, never get married and never have children — but, well... laughs.

Se deixasses Lisboa o que te faria mais falta?

Acho que é a proximidade dos sítios, porque Lisboa é uma cidade pequena e rapidamente podes ir para qualquer lado. E as pessoas, claro. O que nos liga aos sítios são as pessoas, as memórias das pessoas. Os amigos.

Como a paisagem e a luz de Lisboa te influenciaram?

Por exemplo, eu cresci em frente ao rio e para mim ver o Tejo e ver a luz, os azuis, às vezes ajuda-te até a sentires-te melhor.

Como descreves Lisboa em três palavras?

Liberdade, memórias e caminhos.

O que significa Lisboa para ti?

Significa a minha vida toda.

Porque é que me escolheste para eu falar contigo sobre Lisboa?

What would you miss most if you left Lisbon?

I think it would be the closeness of everything, because Lisbon is a small city and you can get almost anywhere very quickly. And the people, of course. What connects us to places are the people, the memories we have of them. Our friends.

How have Lisbon’s landscape and light influenced you?

For example, I grew up near the river, and for me seeing the Tagus, the light and the shades of blue, that can sometimes even help you feel better.

How would you describe Lisbon in three words?
Freedom, memories and paths.

What does Lisbon mean to you?

It means my whole life.

Qual a tua memória mais marcante de Lisboa?

Eu tinha aí uns 16 anos e o Licas – o Luís Saraiva, meu amigo e baterista dos A Jovem Guarda – costumava andar sempre com T-shirts dos Cramps e de outras bandas. Um dia, apareceu de camisa branca. Saímos de mão dada e estávamos felizes. Acho que estava apaixonada e nem sabia.
O Licas era uma pessoa especial que desapareceu repentinamente, muito jovem, aos 19 anos. Acho que o meu coração ficou meio desamparado durante muito tempo, mas aquilo por que passámos nunca desaparecerá.
Esta memória e tudo o que aconteceu a seguir marcaram todo o meu percurso de vida até hoje.

Qual o teu bairro preferido? O que o torna especial?

Apesar de o meu bairro estar muito diferente e de se dividir entre o Cais do Sodré e a Bica, gosto muito dele. Moro ao pé do mercado da Ribeira e pertenço a uma freguesia que já acabou que era a freguesia de São Paulo, que se juntava ao Cais do Sodré. Embora o meu bairro tenha mudado muito, gosto muito dele porque é o bairro onde nasci.

Tens algum hábito ou rotina ligado a um ponto de Lisboa?

Acho que perdi alguns hábitos e rotinas desde que sou cuidadora. Precisava de ir ter com os meus amigos mais vezes e vou menos. Mas há pontos de encontro. Por exemplo, o Jardim da Parada, onde vou ter convosco e onde conheci pessoas especiais. Mesmo que às vezes nos vejamos pouco.

What is your most striking memory of Lisbon?

I must have been around 16, and Licas — Luís Saraiva, my friend and drummer for A Jovem Guarda — used to wear T-shirts from bands like The Cramps all the time. One day, he turned up wearing a white shirt. We went out holding hands and we were happy. I think I was in love and didn’t even realise it.
Licas was a special person who disappeared suddenly, far too young, at 19. I think my heart felt somewhat abandoned for a very long time, but what we went through together has never disappeared.
That memory, and everything that happened afterwards, shaped my whole life and still does.

What’s your favourite neighbourhood? What makes it special?

Even though my neighbourhood is very different now, and sits somewhere between Cais do Sodré and Bica, I still love it very much. I live near Ribeira Market and I belong to a parish that no longer exists — the parish of São Paulo, which used to include Cais do Sodré.
Although my neighbourhood has changed enormously, I still love it because it’s where I was born.

Do you have any habit or routine connected to a particular place in Lisbon?

I think I’ve lost some habits and routines since becoming a carer. I should meet my friends more often, but I do it less now.
Still, there are places where people come together. For example, Jardim da Parada, where I usually meet you guys and where I met special people. Even if sometimes we hardly see one another.

Como te influenciaram a cultura e a vida de Lisboa?

Quando tens um pai que vem da cultura, à partida já estás a ser influenciado por essa pessoa. O meu pai abriu-me caminhos para eu olhar para as coisas de outra forma, para desenvolver o meu sentido crítico, a minha estética.
E como andei no conservatório, vi muita dança. Sempre achei que todas as artes nos poderiam fazer mais felizes. Mexem com as tuas emoções, até como revolta, não é? Por exemplo, a nível de música gosto de muitos tipos de coisas. Tanto gosto de ouvir música clássica como gosto de ouvir rock. Acho que tudo é preciso e que tudo nos faz crescer como pessoas.

Como descreves a energia e o ritmo de Lisboa?

As cidades têm uma energia e um ritmo próprios e tu tens de encontrar os teus no meio disso. Lisboa é a capital e é uma cidade peculiar, até porque é à beira-rio e isso influencia a energia da cidade. Eu gosto muito do nosso rio.

How did Lisbon’s culture and way of life influence you?

When you have a father who comes from a cultural background, you’re already being influenced by that person from the start. My father opened up paths for me to look at things differently, to develop my critical sense and my aesthetic awareness.
And because I studied at the Conservatory, I saw a great deal of dance. I’ve always felt that all forms of art can make us happier. They stir your emotions, even through a sense of revolt, don’t they? For example, musically I like many different kinds of things. I enjoy listening to classical music just as much as I enjoy listening to rock. I think everything has its place, and everything helps us grow as people.

How would you describe the energy and rhythm of Lisbon?

Cities have their own energy and rhythm, and you have to find your own energy and rhythm within that. Lisbon is the capital and it’s a peculiar city, partly because it sits by the river, and that influences the city’s whole energy. I’m very fond of our river.
