On December 30, 1903, the newly opened Iroquois Theatre in Chicago was standing-room-only for a matinee performance of the musical "Mr. Blue Beard." The audience of nearly 2,000 was mostly women and children, enjoying a holiday treat. The theater had been advertised as "absolutely fireproof." It was a lie. During the second act, a spark from a stage light ignited a muslin curtain. The fire spread with terrifying speed. The theater's supposed safety features all failed catastrophically. The asbestos safety curtain got stuck and failed to lower. The stage vents, meant to draw the fire up and away from the audience, were nailed shut. A massive fireball erupted from the stage and swept over the crowd. Panic ensued. People rushed for the 27 exits, but many were hidden behind curtains, unmarked, or locked with iron gates to prevent people without tickets from sneaking in. The stairways became a scene of horror, with hundreds of people crushed to death in the stampede. In less than 20 minutes, over 600 people were dead. The Iroquois Theatre fire was a preventable tragedy of staggering proportions that shocked the nation and led to major reforms in fire safety and building codes across America.

Por qué NO debemos terminar el Tren Urbano

Actualmente, la construcción de una segunda parte del Tren Urbano está en la etapa de coordinación, de estudios y de análisis de alternativas por parte de la Autoridad de Transporte Integrado (ATI). Este proyecto expandiría las rutas del Tren Urbano hasta áreas del Viejo San Juan y el Distrito de Convenciones. Pero como dice el refrán: no todo lo que brilla es oro.

¿Cómo ha sido la trayectoria del tren hasta ahora?

• El Tren Urbano empezó a coordinarse en el 1973 y no fue hasta el 1996 que empezó a construirse. Finalmente, en el 2004 comenzó a operar. Se tardó 30 años con múltiples atrasos y aumentos en costos de construcción.

• El proceso de construcción del tren fue uno desordenado y lento. Se terminó gastando $15,000,000,000 BILLONES DEL COSTO CALCULADO AL 7% DE INTERÉS COMPUESTO para la primera fase del tren. Se tuvo que emitir deuda para construir el tren.

• Todavía estamos pagando de la emisión de bonos que se hizo para poder financiar este proyecto y estaremos pagando hasta el 2043.

Son $15,000,000,000 BILLONES en dinero puertorriqueño y fondos federales que SE PUDIERON HABER USADO PARA EL CRECIMIENTO ECONOMICO DE PUERTO RICO durante los pasados 20 años, en vez de endeudarnos.

Ahora, quieren hacer una segunda fase del tren, que sólo expande a 3 millas desde la estación de Sagrado Corazón hasta el área del Distrito de Convenciones. Usando los costos de la construcción original y el tiempo que tomó la construcción, y considerando la inflación durante ese tiempo, es la primera expansión se estima costará unos $6,719,581,896.72 BILLONES adicionales
