Some images need time before they finally find their way onto your clients’ mood boards. You create something you love, put it out into the world, and sometimes all you can do is wait.

I created these images quite a while ago during one of my creative projects with an amazing model. At the time, they weren’t particularly popular. Hardly anyone was asking for portraits in this style, and they definitely weren’t among my most requested images.

Fast forward to this year, and these photos keep showing up on mood boards sent by my clients. I’ve seen them so many times recently that I decided to share them again and see what you think of them now.

The lighting setup was actually very simple. I used Godox AD600 as a continuous light by simply turning off the flash. No complicated setup, just a simple idea and a bit of experimentation.

I think it’s a good reminder that if you’re struggling to sell the type of work you truly love creating, it doesn’t always mean you’re on the wrong path. Sometimes your audience simply isn’t ready for it yet. Keep showing it, keep posting it, and keep believing in it. The right clients often arrive later than you expect.

Are you creating art that you truly love?Let me tell you a story:
My husband said:

“I understand that you like it, but I’m not sure you’re going to sell it. People don’t like blurry photos with blue skin.”

That was 10 years ago.

I remember feeling disappointed. Not because he wanted to be mean, but because I felt he didn’t understand what I was trying to create. In my head, these photos were art. They were different. They were exciting. They felt like me.

So I posted the image I was incredibly proud of.

It got five likes and zero comments.

Meanwhile, my more ordinary work was getting much more engagement.

For a moment, I thought maybe he was right.

Maybe people didn’t want colorful photos. Maybe they didn’t want motion blur. Maybe they didn’t want something different.

It would have been very easy to go back to what I was doing before.

But I’m a bit of a “hold my beer” person.

So instead of stopping, I doubled down. I created more. I experimented more. I posted more colorful, vibrant, crazy images. Sometimes it felt like nobody cared. Sometimes it felt like I was creating them only for myself.

And then, about a year later, a client walked into my studio and said something I’ll never forget.

She told me she had found me online because she loved my style. She didn’t want ordinary photos. She wanted exactly what I was creating.

Something bold, creative, different.

That was the moment I realized that the goal isn’t to make everybody like your work. The goal is to make the right people love it.

Today, I teach this style to photographers around the world. I teach how to create colorful, vibrant images that stand out and actually attract the clients you want to work with.

These images are from my latest one-to-one mentoring session, where I demonstrated my shutter drag technique using three Godox AD600 lights , gels, and an amazing model .

And now I’m curious... Are you creating the work you truly love? Or are you creating what you think other people want to see?

Because those two things are often very different.

I CAN NOT DECIDE!!! Which is the best to hang on the studio walls? I am obsessed with these portraits …

The set up from this creative project was a bit complex and it took me some time to finally get the desired look but it was so worth the effort- all the effects were created in camera, there are no overlays or digital elements or ai generated bokeh- I just twined with the colors to pop up and accentuate the hues and retouched the skin which was already flawless. So retouching took me less than a couple minutes per image 💪🏻

I recorded the backstage and ii will definitely create a tutorial with this look. Would you like to watch it?

Loooong legs… made even longer… with just styling, camera angle, focal length and light 💙
- pose legs closer to the camera
- get low - this photo was taken from the floor
- use 24 mm close to the model

These look great both in color and bnw :)

These were taken during my 1-1 studio lighting workshop in my studio - where we focused on posing techniques and lighting set ups, which could be used in portrait and maternity sessions.

Two lights set up- also shown on my online academy of creative maternity photography- link in BIO.

I have never been a huge fan of tethering, mostly because I simply do not have space for giant tethering stations in my small studio. All those extra screens, cables, and accessories always felt overwhelming to me and honestly just did not fit the way I like to work during my sessions.

But recently I started using Evoto for some of my shoots and I have to admit that it works really well in certain situations. Not for every session, but especially when I work with very insecure clients, when I want to consult poses together, or when I simply want to see the images on a bigger screen while shooting. I also really like being able to show the model an almost fully edited image immediately with my preset already applied because it helps them relax and feel much more confident during the session.

That is why the Evoto mobile application became such a comfortable option for me. It is simple, easy to manage, and does not require a huge setup in the studio.

So here you have a short tutorial showing how I use Evoto during my sessions and how I make the experience comfortable both for myself and for my models.

The application is completely free to try and the only moment you need credits is when exporting images to your local device. If you want to try it yourself, I also have a special 20% discount for you.

Comment “EVOTO” and I will send you the coupon.
