At first glance, Volucella pellucens is easily mistaken for a bumblebee. In reality, it's a hoverfly that uses remarkable mimicry to discourage predators.
This species is found throughout most of Europe and temperate Asia, inhabiting woodland edges, forest clearings, parks, and gardens. Adults feed on nectar and pollen, while females lay their eggs in the nests of bumblebees and social wasps. Their larvae develop inside the nests, feeding mainly on organic debris.
Its most distinctive feature is the broad white band across the abdomen, creating a striking contrast with its velvety black body.

Although still young, this nymph already has everything needed to become a remarkable predator: exceptional vision, lightning-fast reflexes, and incredible precision.

Cuckoo wasp (family Chrysididae), one of the most brilliantly coloured insects found in Europe.
Its dazzling metallic colours are not produced by pigments. Instead, microscopic structures in the exoskeleton reflect and refract light, creating vivid shades of green, blue, violet, and gold—a phenomenon known as structural coloration.
Cuckoo wasps occur throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa, typically in sunny meadows, woodland edges, and sandy habitats. Females lay their eggs in the nests of solitary bees and wasps, earning them the name "cuckoo wasps."
