The cockchafer is one of the symbols of May, appears periodically in large numbers, but spends its days rather secretively, snacking on younger leaves from trees, and only in the evening can it be seen making its stately flight. The larva develops underground for 3-4 years, and in the third stage of its development, it becomes an extremely efficient devourer of young roots and root collars, which is why farmers, gardeners, and foresters consider it a serious crop pest. Did you know that in France, as recently as the early 20th century, cockchafers were eaten to make soup? Apparently, it tasted similar to crab soup. There's a article from the 19th century describing how students also ate them raw, and that confectioners sold them candied as high-protein candy ;)

Mea culpa! Two days ago, 20 May, was , and I didn't post anything for the occasion. I'm making up for it today with one of the nearly 500 species of bees inhabiting Poland. Because it was a day for all bees, including wild ones.

Trophobiosis is one of the most fastinating phenomenoms in insects world, mutualism interaction between ants and aphids, where aphids provide the ants with their sugar-rich liquid waste called honeydew, while the ants actively protect the aphids from predators, parasites.

This time photo quality is not the most important. According to paper of Dziechcinska et al. 2025, Dipteron 41(05) 75-80. This fly has only been observed in Poland since 2021, making my observation among the top ten of this species in my country and the 1st in the Wielkopolska region. On the other hand, this species is recorded in many European countries, both south and north of Poland, as well as east and west. It's therefore somewhat unlikely that it's a new species. It's rather rarely observed. And since it has very specific habitat preferences: old-growth forests with beech and oak (it feeds on fungi growing on dead branches), the lack of suitable niches would probably be a good reason for its rare sightings. Recent sightings have occurred at near Kraków, in Upper Silesia (Żary, Katowice), Lower Silesia (Wroclaw), near the western border with Germany (), in the far north in Gdynia, and on the southern fringes of Poland in the . I think that we can therefore venture to say that this is a species that is widespread in Poland, but secretive and rarely observed.

My favourite forest weevil as it have all features of ideal macro photo model: it's relatively big, but not too big; it's opaque surfaced, so there is not problem with light reflections; and the most important - it's very, very parient. Finally, I recommend it for cooperation, especially for beginners in macro photography.
However, for foresters - growers of young pine monocultures - it's enemy number one, a true devil incarnate ;) It passionately gnaws at the root collars of young pines, capable of destroying entire plantations in this way. Thus, it's truly a major problem for forest plantations. But not to be confused it with the forest.

That is just that day!
And I still have some photos from recent season to show. Phyllobius weevils are among most common. See details in zoom view swiping to the right.

There are no so much more spring insects as St. Mark's flies. A true hordes of them appear in spring, flying clumsily, occupying everything they can and, of course, having s*x, because that's what insect life is really all about ;)) Their hordes appear in the spring, flying clumsily, occupying everything they can, and of course having s*x, because that's what insect life is really all about ;)) Especially if their adult life only lasts a week, which it does for them. So why regret it? ;)
