📘 Speedway 101: Lesson 7 - The Steel Shoe
Ever seen a motorcycle rider wear a steel shoe? 👀
In Speedway, it’s not a gimmick - it’s survival.
Riders slide sideways at over 60 mph with no brakes. The left boot has a steel plate strapped underneath - shaped to fit the shoe, secured with a simple strap. It scrapes along the track, helping the rider balance and guide the bike through the turn.
Without it, the rider’s foot would dig into the track, risking injury and loss of balance.
Even top pros rarely rest their foot on the ground, but the steel shoe is still mandatory. The friction and sparks slowly wear it down over time.
Meanwhile, the right leg does the real work - the foot rests on a hook, while the rider’s thigh presses against the frame to control the lean and slide angle. That’s where real control happens.
No brakes. No fear. Just steel. 🏁
