Islamabad, 18 February 2026: Ministry of Finance has declined support for the creation of new posts in various departments of Gilgit-Baltistan, citing fiscal constraints and adherence to the Federal Government’s rightsizing policy.
In an official letter (No. 6(14)PF-II/2024) issued by Babar Nazir, Section Officer (PF-II), the Ministry referred to correspondence from the Finance Department Gilgit-Baltistan dated 22 January 2026 regarding the creation of posts.
According to the letter, a joint committee comprising representatives of the Federal Government and the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan had finalized its recommendations on 1 October 2024 concerning issues of GB civil employees. The committee identified that more than 2,000 sanctioned posts across various departments in GB remain vacant. However, the implementation report on filling these vacancies is still awaited from the GB Government.
The Ministry further recalled that 785 regular posts of critical importance have already been created in the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan during the last two years. Instead of expanding the civil structure further, it has been proposed that the existing vacant posts may either be abolished or re-designated to meet current employment needs.
Highlighting the financial limitations faced by the Federal Government and noting that Gilgit-Baltistan is entirely dependent on federal resources, the Ministry stated that it does not support further expansion of the civil structure, terming it inconsistent with the ongoing rightsizing policy.
