Bhamala Stupa is one of the most important Buddhist archaeological sites located near Khanpur Dam in the Taxila region of Haripur District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. The stupa is built in the Kashmiri cruciform architectural style and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, along with other famous landmarks in the historical valley of Taxila. Sir John Marshall was the first archaeologist to excavate the Bhamala Stupa in 1930-31. However, the site was not fully excavated as Sir Marshall focused his research resources on the famous site of Sirkap.

Nearly 80 years later, in 2012-13, scientific archaeological excavations were resumed at the Bhamala Stupa site. The excavations were led by a team from Hazara University, working in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin. Given the archaeological potential of the site, the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, conducted further excavations and research at the Bhamala Stupa site from 2014 to 2016. Both research excavations were led by Dr. Abdul Samad, the Director of Archaeology KPK, who was previously an Assistant Professor in the Department of Archaeology at Hazara University in Mansehra. He worked alongside the internationally renowned authority on Gandhara and Harappa, Professor Jonathan Mark Kenoyer, on the excavation of Bhamala.

The excavations revealed terracotta and stucco sculptures, coins, and items made of iron and copper. Another significant cruciform stupa was also discovered, surrounded by a sub-stupa and many stucco sculptures. The most remarkable discovery was a 14-meter-long reclining Buddha, considered to be the largest in the world. Numerous terracotta images depicting monks and mourners were also found from within the sleeping chamber. The great Buddha statue sits on a stone platform inside a long mourning chamber.

Radiocarbon dating was conducted on the burned wood and charcoal taken from the terracotta sculptures placed around the memorial image of the Sleeping Buddha. Laboratory reports estimated that the Sleeping Buddha was created during the 3rd century AD.

The second fortified city of Taxila, "Sirkap," has long been the subject of archaeological and historical studies of art. Its name was derived from a character in a folk tale, "Raja Rasalu and the Seven Demons," who lived and ruled here. Sirkap includes the westernmost part of the Hethial Spur and is located about two kilometers from the Taxila Museum, along the banks of the Tamra River. Since 1980, it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Excavations at Sirkap have been conducted only partially, covering about an eighth of the city. Mr. H. Hargreaves, under the guidance of Sir John Marshall, carried out excavations on these remains between 1912 and 1930. Further excavations were carried out by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in 1944-1945. As a result of these excavations, seven continuous sections of the remains have been identified, extending to a depth of 18 to 23 feet below the surface, representing several centuries of occupation.
After the abandonment of Bhira Mound, Sirkap became the central city of Taxila in the second century BCE. The ancient city was well-planned, fortified, and surrounded by a city wall that was approximately five kilometers or 6,000 yards long.
The central road running through Sirkap included architectural structures such as houses, shops for the citizens, and places of worship, such as the Round Temple, Sun Temple, Double-Headed Eagle Stupa, and the King's Palace.
Ashokan inscriptions and other relics, such as coins, jewelry, latrine trays, and domestic items discovered at Sirkap, all indicate cultural connections and exchanges with Western Asia and the Mediterranean regions. Sirkap is mentioned in many historical books, and the ancient city is described as "Sirkap, as large as Nineveh and as well-fortified as Greek cities."

Julian has been included in the World Heritage List since 1980, which was recognized under UNESCO as part of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Being included in this list not only confirms the global cultural significance of these monuments but also guarantees their permanent protection for the benefit of humanity. Located 7 kilometers from the Taxila Museum, on a hill at an elevation of 92 meters, the remains of Julian date back to the 2nd century AD, during the Kushan period.
The monastery at Julian was one of the oldest universities in the world until it was destroyed in the 5th century AD. Excavations of these remains took place in 1916-17 under the supervision of Sir John Marshall. The monastery at Julian primarily consists of a central stupa and twenty-seven smaller stupas. Another monastery, which includes two courtyards, contains the living quarters of monks and places of worship.
Julian's monastery was one of the oldest universities in the world, attracting students from the Indian subcontinent, as well as from Central and Southeast Asia and China. The monastery at Julian is in better condition than many other monasteries in the region, and many statues have been transferred to the Taxila Museum.
Julian had its own unique charm, but after the brutal invasions of the White Huns in the late 5th century, the economic decline that followed left this beautiful monastery to be destroyed by the ravages of time. A similar fate befell the other monasteries located in Taxila.

The construction of the Mughal Gardens was initiated by Mughal Emperor Akbar's general and minister, Man Singh, during his posting in this area from 1581 to 1585. He built a pond, a small building, and a wall with twelve gates around a natural spring at the site of Jalala Sar. According to tradition, when Mughal Emperor Jahangir saw these gardens while traveling to Kabul, he was so impressed by their beauty that he spontaneously exclaimed "Wah" (meaning "wow"), and from that day, the name of Jalala Sar was changed to Wah. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, after ascending the throne, stayed in these gardens for the first time in 1639 and ordered further construction. Under these orders, the famous architect Ahmad Lahori completed the construction of Mughal-style gardens, Baradaris (pavilions), canals, waterfalls, fountains, and hot and cold water baths within two years. After completion, Shah Jahan visited the gardens four times. From 1812 to 1847, the area was under Sikh rule, during which, like other Mughal buildings, the Mughal Gardens in Wah were not spared and suffered irreparable damage. In 1865, the British government granted these gardens and the surrounding area to Nawab Muhammad Hayat Khan as a reward for his family's services to the British. In 1976, the government of Pakistan purchased the Mughal Gardens of Wah and opened them to the public. The Mughal Gardens of Wah are a beautiful and picturesque location, surrounded by mountains and scenic views. The area captivates visitors with its natural beauty, flowing water, lovely ponds, and fish in the ponds. Some old buildings are still preserved. It is an ideal and suitable place for families to visit.
