Attock Fort was built in 1581 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar to protect the important crossing of the Indus River and defend the northwestern frontier of the Mughal Empire. The fort was strategically constructed near the meeting point of the Indus and Kabul rivers.
Over the centuries, the fort was controlled by different powers including the Mughals, Sikhs under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and later the British Empire. Because of its military importance, it remained a key defensive stronghold in the region.
Today, Attock Fort is managed by the Pakistan Army and is recognized as an important historical landmark of Pakistan.
