A generation or two ago all parents were raising outdoor kids and now i constantly have bemused mothers commenting on how theyre so proud of how i let my kids do everything outdoors and how they wish they had the same guts. Khizer, Musa and i spend a majority of our days outside in our garden where we’re growing a variety of vegetables, playing and gardening or we go out for long walks. The moment my kids step outside, theres a shift in the way they play. They are free to to be authentically themselves, whether that’s loud or quiet, busy or still, curious or bored, and it’s not just my kids that experience this shift. It’s been shown through research that kids start feeling relaxed within minutes of being outside around nature. The freedom to play outside also helps children feel less stressed, anxious and depressed. In this digital world, its a struggle to raise kids away from screens and technology - i’m not trying to deprive them of that - i’m merely trying to strike a healthy balance between the two where they get to be creative in the absence of a playtime directed by toys and gadgets, which in my opinion are adding to the plastic waste of our planet. It gives them the freedom to be creative- imagining a pebble to be a fish and a twig to be a rake;)
