The Mirage We Live By
We are strange creatures, aren’t we?
Always leaning toward the window,
never quite settled in the room.
Reaching for the fruit on the highest branch,
while the one in our hand
quietly loses its sweetness.
But perhaps it was never about the fruit.
Perhaps it is the reaching itself —
the not-yet-knowing,
the space between the want and the having,
that feels most like being alive.
And here is the thing nobody says out loud —
the life you are living right now,
this ordinary, unremarkable Tuesday,
was once a dream you couldn’t sleep for.
The thing you have,
the person beside you,
the room you sit in —
all of it was once
on the other side of your longing.
You just don’t remember the longing anymore.
Because knowing something
is the slowest way of losing it.
Familiarity doesn’t kill love —
it kills wonder.
And without wonder,
even the most beautiful things
begin to look like furniture.
So we look out the window again.
Find a new horizon to ache for.
And call it desire.
When really,
it is just the fear
of ever feeling
truly
arrived.
