Ninoy Aquino Day is observed every August 21 to commemorate the life and tragic assassination of former Philippine Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., a leading voice against the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos. Upon returning from a three-year self-imposed exile in the United States to seek peace and restore democracy, Aquino was shot and killed on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983. His death sparked massive national outrage, serving as the catalyst for the 1986 People Power Revolution that ousted Marcos and propelled Ninoy's widow, Corazon Aquino, to the presidency. To honor his ultimate sacrifice for Philippine freedom, Republic Act No. 9256 was enacted in 2004, officially declaring August 21 of every year as a national special non-working holiday.
