Negros Occidental has recorded approximately 1,781 HIV cases since 1986, making it one of the provinces with the highest HIV cases in the Negros Island Region. (Watchmen Daily Journal)

In 2025, Negros Occidental recorded the highest number of new HIV cases in the region, with 25 new cases reported in the first months of the year. (Watchmen Daily Journal)

For teenage pregnancy, Negros Occidental has consistently reported one of the highest numbers in the region, with around 2,699 adolescent births in 2023 according to regional reports. (Reddit)

Today, we face two serious challenges affecting many young people in our communities: HIV and teenage pregnancy. These issues are not just numbers in a report; they are real stories of young lives, interrupted dreams, and families facing difficult circumstances.

The fight against HIV and teenage pregnancy begins with education. Young people must have access to accurate information about health, responsible relationships, and the consequences of risky behavior. Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Second, we must strengthen communication within families. Parents, guardians, and mentors should create safe spaces where young people can ask questions without fear or judgment. Open conversations can prevent many problems before they begin.

Third, we need to encourage responsibility and self-respect. Every young person should understand that their decisions today can shape their future. Choosing to focus on education, personal growth, and life goals can help protect them from situations that may lead to HIV infection or early pregnancy.

Fourth, our schools, communities, and government agencies must continue to provide health services, counseling, and support programs. Prevention is always better than cure.

Most importantly, we must not respond with discrimination or shame. Instead, we must show compassion, understanding, and support to those affected. Stigma only makes the problem harder to solve.

Let us work together to build a future where every young person has the knowledge, opportunity, and confidence to make responsible choices. By educating, guiding, and supporting one another, we can reduce HIV cases, prevent teenage pregnancy, and help our youth achieve their dreams.

The future of our generation depends on the actions we take today. Thank you, and let us be part of the solution.
