APERTURE (F-STOP)
Aperture (F-stop)
Aperture is how big (or small) the opening in your lens is. The aperture is also referred to as the F-stop. In a nutshell, the larger the F-stop number, the less light the lens lets in. For example, if you set your F-stop to F/8.0, the aperture is closed quite a bit, and not a lot of light is getting to your sensor. On the flip side, a smaller F-stop, such as F/2.8, lets in a large amount of light. In addition to the size of the aperture affecting light intake, it also affects what we call "depth of field." Depth of field refers to how much of your scene is in focus, basically. The lower the F-stop, the smaller the depth of field, the more blurred the background is. In the same way, a higher F-stop number increases the depth of field and allows for more of the image to be in focus.
