Last August 11, the faithful celebrated the feast day of St. Clare of Assisi.
But who is Saint Clare?
Saint Clare was a woman inspired by Saint Francis. She left her wealthy life to embrace poverty, prayer, and service, living in deep trust in God and defending the vow of absolute poverty. She is the patron saint of television and, through popular devotion, of good weather.
In some places, there is the tradition of “itlog kay Santa Clara,” offering uncooked eggs at her altar, often with written petitions for good weather. Many people visit the Monastery of Saint Clare, especially on her feast day, to ask for prayers: couples hoping for a child, students preparing for board exams or thesis defenses, and others seeking God’s help for various needs.
In one of the homilies of Fr. Edwin Peter Dionisio, OFM, during the feast of the Seraphic Mother he reminds us:
“Kapag dininig na ng Diyos ang inyong mga panalangin, huwag ninyong kalimutang magpasalamat sa Diyos. Punta kayo nang punta dito, hingi kayo nang hingi ng dasal sa mga mongha pinapasalamatan ba ninyo ang mga mongha? Kapag tayo’y dininig na ng Diyos, kadalasan nakakalimutan na natin sila.”
May we honor St. Clare not only by asking for her intercession, but also by remembering to give thanks for every blessing we receive and to the nuns who tirelessly pray for our intentions.
St. Clare of Assisi, pray for us.
