Phew! Thank goodness I looked this up before touching it any further. It turns out the boat lily (Tradescantia spathacea) is actually toxic.

This beautiful plant looks like a tiny boat cradling the white blooms inside. But they can cause skin irritation, itching, and stinging.

Just to be safe, it's best to wear gloves whenever you're around it. Ingestion can also lead to irritation of the lips, mouth, throat, and abdominal pain, so keep this plant out of reach of curious children and pets.
