A thoughtfully crafted building facade can completely change the way people perceive and interact with a space.

Looking across modern city skylines, it is easy to notice the growing presence of glass-covered buildings that create distinctive and elegant appearances.

Glass facades, often created through glass curtain wall systems, bring natural light and warmth into interiors while providing a feeling of openness and visual connection with the outside world. Although glass architecture may seem like a recent development, many remarkable buildings across the globe have already demonstrated the beauty and functionality of this design approach.

Davis-Harrington Welcome Center, Springfield, USA

The Davis-Harrington Welcome Center serves as the main gateway to Missouri State University. The building follows a two-level layout, with its exterior materials carefully selected to respond to the surrounding campus environment.

At ground level, limestone provides a strong, long-lasting surface that blends naturally with the campus setting. The northern side of the building features a gradually narrowing glass curtain wall, increasing transparency and drawing attention toward the primary entrance.

The snowy owl is one of the largest and most recognizable owls in North America. It can reach a height similar to that of a Great Horned Owl, but it is heavier than any other owl species found on the continent. Unlike many owls, the snowy owl has a smooth, rounded head without visible ear tufts. Its bright yellow eyes and dark beak create a striking contrast against its pale feathers.

Adult males often become almost completely white as they mature, while females and younger birds usually have noticeable black or brown markings scattered across their bodies. This beautiful coloring helps them blend into their cold northern environment.

RANGE

Snowy owls have a circumpolar range, meaning they are found throughout the Arctic regions around the world. During the breeding season, they remain almost entirely within the Arctic tundra. When winter arrives, many move southward in search of food and can regularly be seen across the Great Plains.

Some individuals travel much farther south, with occasional sightings occurring as far away as Indiana. In certain years, known as irruption years, unusually large numbers of snowy owls leave their Arctic homes and appear throughout parts of the United States.

The exact reason behind these large movements is still not completely understood. Scientists believe they may be connected to changes in lemming populations, which are the owl's primary food source, along with weather conditions. In Minnesota, snowy owls are considered regular winter visitors.

Bald Eagles Aren't Actually Bald

Whether depicted on the back of a U.S. quarter or standing high above the ground in a treetop, the Bald Eagle is one of the most instantly recognizable birds on Earth. These large and powerful birds of prey inhabit coastlines, lakes, rivers, and other waterways throughout North America.

They build enormous nests, raise their young in them, and occupy the top levels of the food chain within their territories.

The Bald Eagle has long been associated with the United States and has become one of the country's most recognizable national symbols. Yet these impressive raptors also have some unexpected habits, from their dramatic courtship flights to their willingness to search for food around landfills. Here are several interesting facts about this iconic American bird, including one surprising detail about the sound it makes.

The name "Bald Eagle" can be misleading because the bird is certainly not without feathers on its head. Adults have bright white feathers covering their heads, creating a sharp contrast with their dark brown bodies. The name probably originated with early British settlers in North America during the late 1500s. At the time, the Middle English word "balde" meant "white-headed" rather than hairless. Even the scientific name, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, can be translated as "white-headed sea eagle."

Bald Eagles Are Native Only to North America

The Bald Eagle is the only eagle species whose natural range is entirely within North America. Its distribution stretches from Canada southward to northern Mexico. These birds have been recorded in every U.S. state except Hawaii.

Bald Eagles commonly establish nests high in forest trees close to large bodies of water. This location gives them an excellent view of the surrounding landscape while keeping them near productive feeding areas. Some individuals remain in the same region throughout the year, while others migrate, spending the warmer months in Canada and moving into the Lower 48 states during winter.

The Orange-spotted Bulbul, scientifically known as Pycnonotus bimaculatus, is a member of the Pycnonotidae family. This bird gets its common name from the noticeable orange markings on its throat and breast. With its attractive plumage, characteristic calls, and ability to adapt to different environments, it is a distinctive bulbul species.

Appearance

The Orange-spotted Bulbul is a medium-sized bird with a body length of approximately 23-25 centimeters. Its overall plumage is olive-green, while the lower parts of its body have a yellowish coloration. Males generally have darker heads and upperparts compared with females, although both sexes display the characteristic orange markings across the breast. These bright spots are among the most useful features for recognizing the species.

Have you ever noticed how one flower can make an entire garden feel more cheerful? Cape Marguerite, commonly called African daisy and often associated with the genus Osteospermum, does exactly that with its bold petals, contrasting centers, and long flowering season.

Native to southern Africa, this sun-loving plant has adapted well to gardens in many regions because of its tolerance of dry conditions and preference for bright light.

The right drainage, sunlight, watering rhythm, and pruning routine can make a noticeable difference in both foliage and flower production.

Start With Fast-Draining Soil

Cape Marguerite dislikes sitting in constantly wet soil. Its roots perform better in a loose growing medium where excess water can escape quickly after irrigation or rainfall.

Sandy loam or another well-drained soil is particularly suitable. If the garden soil contains a lot of clay, incorporating mature compost and coarse material can improve its structure and drainage. Organic matter also supports steady growth without turning the planting area into a waterlogged environment.

Recent advances in hydrangea breeding have created an impressive range of repeat-blooming varieties. Traditional hydrangeas generally form their flower buds on growth produced during the previous year, while many newer cultivars can develop buds on both old wood and new wood. In Portland, this can result in a long flowering season that begins in June and continues until the first frost.

Plant Care and Information

Family
Hydrangeaceae
Genus

Hydrangea comes from the Greek words hydor, meaning water, and aggeion, meaning vessel. The name refers to the cup-like shape of the plant's fruit.

Common Name
Hydrangea

There are approximately 100 species of hydrangeas, including shrubs, small trees, and climbing vines. Most species produce two distinct types of flowers: fertile flowers and sterile flowers.

Fertile flowers are generally small and less noticeable, often appearing toward the center of a flower cluster. Sterile flowers are much larger and provide most of the plant's showy floral display. Depending on the species, the flowers can be arranged in several different types of clusters.

The lotus flower is regarded as one of the most meaningful and symbolic flowers found around the world. In certain religions and spiritual traditions, it is also considered a sacred emblem.

Lotus seeds are particularly remarkable because they can remain dormant through drought conditions for more than two hundred years. Even after such an extraordinarily long period, a viable seed may still sprout and develop into a plant. Discover the symbolism of the lotus, where it originated, and some of its most interesting characteristics.

Some fruits look completely different from the trees that produce them, creating surprising contrasts between foliage, branches, and ripening produce.

A tree may have ordinary-looking leaves and branches while producing fruits with unusual colors, shapes, textures, or sizes. This contrast comes from the different roles played by each part of the plant. Leaves are mainly adapted to capture light, while fruits develop around seeds and often take forms that help with protection or dispersal. As a result, the fruit can look almost unrelated to the tree carrying it. Fruit tree care

Unusual Shapes And Sizes

Some fruits develop shapes that are difficult to predict from the appearance of their trees. They may be round, elongated, ridged, star-shaped, or covered with distinctive bumps. A tree with narrow leaves and thin branches can sometimes produce surprisingly large fruits. In other cases, a tall tree may carry small fruits that appear delicate compared with its overall structure. These differences make certain fruiting trees especially interesting to observe.

Colors That Stand Out

Fruit color can also create a dramatic contrast with the tree. Green foliage may surround fruits that become bright yellow, orange, red, purple, or even nearly black as they mature. Some fruits change color gradually, while others develop contrasting shades across their surface. Because leaves generally remain within a narrower range of natural colors, brightly colored fruits can become the most noticeable feature of the entire tree.

The Eurasian Jay (Garrulus glandarius) belongs to the Corvidae, or crow, family and is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent groups of animals. I had the opportunity to experience that intelligence for myself when I tried to photograph one particular jay in my garden.

The experience became a surprisingly complicated battle of patience and strategy, and the story that follows may offer some useful observations, especially for fellow birdwatchers and photographers.

How the Garden Bird Blind Changed Everything

In the winter of 2023, I began feeding birds in my garden on a large tree trunk that I had pulled beneath the fig tree directly opposite my wooden shed. A small opening in the wall of the shed gave me the perfect opportunity to photograph visiting birds from a distance of less than two metres.

Using the shed as a makeshift

photographic blind completely transformed my bird photography. In all the years before that, I had managed to produce only one genuinely usable bird photograph. Yet within a few weeks of setting up the feeding station and hiding in the shed, I had successfully photographed most of the birds that regularly visited the garden.

Nuthatches, Blue T**s, Great T**s, Marsh T**s, Dunnocks, Italian Sparrows and many other species all came close enough for detailed photographs.
